I bought this because I make/mix music in an earful, untreatable room. I just wanted a reliable way to mix on headphones. I bought these Jan 2022 and the build quality is very good (previous versions we’re apparently prone to breaking). I’ve already gotten very good results after a month of use.
The software is excellent and the emulations of rooms/monitors/headphones gives an amazing range of listening options, but I’d recommend picking favourites and sticking with them. You need to treat it like a studio you’re familiar with, and you can get great results this way
Pros: 1) the price is incredibly fair for what you get.
2) once you’re used to the immersive sound, you stop noticing it.
3) Steven Slates’ mixroom is worth the price alone
Cons: 1) They need to make a standalone version. You can (and I have) gotten around it with the Audio Hijack app…but there is latency when playing guitar apps etc
2) I’m used to open-back headphones and they can be a little tight after a while…but only by comparison to Sennheiser HD595s
All around, when it comes to mixing, you need to trust your ears, and so many of us making music can’t do that through speakers. The Slate VSX headphones gives you incredible feedback and listening options without ever leaving you chair. Fantastic product!
