The MOTU M4 is a studio-quality 4 In / 4
Genrell offers the USB-C interface two combo jacks including Hi-Z feature, so that electric guitars can also be connected directly. They also have the necessary 48V phantom power for condenser microphones and a convenient display for monitoring the input and output signal. The ESS Sabre32 Ultra DAC technology ensures crystal-clear results that can be heard and do not have to hide from professional recordings. Unlike the M4, two additional line inputs are added for even more flexibility.
Furthermore, the MOTU M4 benefits from an extremely low latency for precise and clock-accurate recordings. Recording is done in 24 bit and a maximum of 192 kHz, while two RCA and two jack stereo outputs are available for monitoring. The MIDI-capable device is powered via USB-C. A free and extensive sound library with 6GB of loops, samples and phrases rounds out the overall picture.
I wanted to get a new audio interface and discovered these MOTU units were fairly recent on the market, which was one of the problems, it was difficult finding anyone who had them in stock! I am glad that I went to the trouble of tracking one down, because the sound quality is great and the build is robust and very functional. I love the fact it has the LED level meters and MIDI connectors as well. Very easy to set up
The Motu m4 is a very nice usb interface. Worked great for me in Mac OSX. The workmanship is very good, meters are very nice to have etc. There is enough gain for a Rode Podmic (the mic I use for radio).
The sound...quite good. Seems clear and quiet preamps. Unfortunately, preamp #1 was defective so I had to return the item.
I bought a SSL 2 to replace it. To me the SSL 2 has a much better preamp. More gain and just something special about it. I am using it with a Rode Podmic and there is plenty of gain.
I like the design and meters better on the Motu m4. I think it is a better balanced product than the SSL 2, and would chose it over SSL 2 if I could fine one in stock! Both are very good though.
Exeptional quality. Use this as an extra portable soundcard to assist my 828 mk3, living room mixing, recording vinyl, cozy percussion sessions in the sofa etc. Always thought the new Macbook Pro DA/headphone out was of great quality but its been like I hear things in 3D again, depth is back, clear separation etc. Motu Headphone amp is great too, my Audeze LCD-2C sounds stellar, it cant drive them maxed out but on normal volume levels its flawless, didnt expect that, those usually need a proper dedicated amp. Insane this card doesnt cost more. Cant recommend highly enough!
I can only say how awesome it was that DV247 were able to supply a Motu M4 at a time when the Motu supply chain was adversely effected by the global pandemic. Great job, and many thanks. It's a superb unit. Only one comment regarding contents in the box. I found it odd that a cutting edge USB-C audio interface is supplied (in the box) with a USB-C to USB-A cable. To me (and as a MacBook Pro / Logic Pro user) it would be nice if Motu provided the USB-C to USB-C cable. Nonetheless, awesome hardware.
