With the CyDrums, Sonicware introduces a digital drum computer that generates punchy percussion sounds using wavetable synthesis and structure models. This compact groovebox offers six-voice polyphony in combination with an 8-track sequencer, making it a powerful rhythm machine. Each track can be up to 8 bars long (128 steps) and supports polyrhythms with ease. The internal memory allows storage of up to 1,024 sounds, including 550 factory presets. With a comprehensive effects section featuring 22 insert effects and 5 master effects, users can sculpt drum kits with maximum character and variety. For producers looking to go beyond classic analog sounds, the flexible wavetable engine opens up a whole world of experimental, cyber-style percussion.
The CyDrums engine is based on wavetable synthesis, giving users deep control over the harmonic texture of their sounds. You can sweep through 64 wavetables in multiple directions, with adjustable start/end points and scan speed. A dedicated noise generator and TICK element add punch to transients. To enhance the sonic variety, users can choose from 22 different sound STRUCTURES – preconfigured voice architectures that combine oscillators, envelopes, filters, and noise generators in unique ways. Sound shaping continues with a resonant multimode filter, parametric EQ, and an amp section that includes its own envelope, distortion, and FX bus. Each track has an independent modulation matrix where over 60 parameters can be dynamically modulated by velocity, aftertouch, and envelopes, allowing for extremely detailed and expressive drum programming.
The CyDrums features a powerful 8-track sequencer organized into tracks and songs. Each track can be assigned a mode: normal, random, or stutter. Sequences can be entered live or via step programming in TR-style grid mode. Up to 128 patterns per project are supported, each with a maximum of 128 steps, and 16 songs can be saved. Parameter locks allow for precise automation of values per step, while a shuffle function injects groove and swing. In addition, live performance effects offer real-time variations to patterns – ideal for on-the-fly changes without altering the core sequence.
The CyDrums is well-equipped for studio and live use. A USB port allows connection to a smartphone or computer, enabling direct audio streaming in and out of the device. This allows users to record stereo output straight into a DAW or sample external audio into CyDrums. The input impedance is switchable, accommodating line, mic, and Hi-Z signals. A built-in microphone is also included for instant sampling of ambient or vocal sounds. The main stereo output connects easily to any mixer or interface. For external control, the unit includes MIDI In/Out and Analog Sync In & Out, making it easy to sync with gear like Korg Volca, Teenage Engineering Pocket Operators, or other analog and MIDI-compatible instruments.
