A well-equipped quad modulation source

The ModBox MkII from WMD is a successful evolution of the original ModBox, which emerged several years ago from a collaboration between WMD and Steady State Fate. The MkII offers four modulation sources – 3-phase LFO, Skew LFO, Sample & Hold and analogue noise – all in one unit, and can be extensively controlled and modulated.

The 3-phase LFO generates complex, interrelated modulations across three outputs. Phase 1 always sets the base tempo, which can be freely adjusted or synchronised to the input clock signal. The other two outputs can be phase-shifted by up to 360° in opposite directions, modulated in series via phase modulation, or sequentially reduced in frequency. The waveform is set jointly for all three phase outputs and morphs continuously from sawtooth through sine to triangle and then to ramp.

The Skew LFO offers a continuous transition from sawtooth through triangle to ramp and allows the waveform to be ‘smoothed out’ using the Slope parameter. The frequency range is very wide and extends into the audio range. Furthermore, the Skew LFO can be synchronised to a clock signal and its phase can be shifted to generate rhythmic modulation at exactly the right moment.

The S&H section offers a choice of Sample & Hold, Track & Hold or Turing Machine. S&H generates a different random value with every new gate/trigger. T&H lets the signal pass through (white noise is pre-patched) as long as a gate is applied, whilst TM behaves like a shift register that accumulates voltages and outputs them sequentially. The Slew parameter can be used to smooth out the stepped control voltages.

The fourth and final modulation source on the ModBox MkII is the analogue noise generator, which produces white noise and forms part of the S&H function. No extra control, no extra function; just noise.
