The Behringer Spice at a glance
The Behringer Spice is a clone of the semi-modular analog synthesizer Moog Subharmonicon. No less than two main oscillators and four sub-oscillators provide a very broad and radiant sound foundation. This results in rich chords, pulsating soundscapes, massive basslines and generic sounds. The waveforms of the main oscillators can be switched between square, sawtooth and a mixture. The four sub-oscillators each have the sawtooth waveform, but their frequency and level can be freely determined. The filter is a resonant 24dB Lowpass filter with a wide frequency range and goes down low; the resonance extends into self-oscillation. Two attack/decay envelopes are permanently assigned to the filter and VCA, allowing sounds to be realized that range from percussive to floating to long decaying. Historically speaking, the Spice has no direct ancestor in this sense, but is largely inspired by the sound generators of the early Trautonium (1930), Rythmicon (1931) and the Schillinger system (also from the 1930s).
The sequencer
The sequencer section of the Spice consists of three units: there are two four-step sequencers for the oscillators and one called Rhythm. Sequencer 1 controls the pitches of oscillator 1 and its two sub-oscillators, which of the three follows the pitch control is switchable. Sequencer 2 controls the pitches of oscillator 2 and its sub-oscillators; here too, you can switch which of the three is linked to the pitch control. Rhythm generates a different timing and divider ratio for each controller and can be applied to sequencer 1 and/or 2. This results in very lively and varied patterns which, in the overall context of the sound generation, create a complex and easy-to-use whole. If that's not enough or you want to try something different, you can connect a MIDI keyboard or control the Spice with more complex sequencers from a modular system.
The patch panel
The patch panel, which shares the upper quarter of the user interface with MIDI In and Out/Thru, has 16 inputs and 16 outputs for audio, CV, gate, trigger and clock signals. This multiplies the sonic possibilities many times over, making the Spice a semi-modular synthesizer. Each functional area and several secondary functions have their own inputs and outputs. This makes the Spice ideal for expanding other semi-modular synthesizers and entire modular systems, respectively adding oscillators and control voltages. In turn, Spice eg. can be triggered and modulated by a random sequencer. In addition, interactions are possible for which there are no control elements, such as changing the rhythm using an A/D envelope.

This one is a bit special, so I wouldn't recommend it to be your first synth. But if you already have some experience and understanding of subtractive synthesis, this could be a nice addition to your setup. I already have the Crave and Edge, so it was a no-brainer to get this one as well. I'm still in the process of learning how to work this little gem, but it sounds fantastic and has a new, challenging workflow to get used to, but not too complicated. After a number of hours more of tweaking knobs, I'll get the hang of it :)
