The soul of the drums: A trip to New Orleans

When it comes to the origins of groove, swing and funk, there is no way around New Orleans. This is where the drum set as we know it today was born. It was here that African, Caribbean, French and Creole rhythms merged into a pulsating musical language that gave birth to jazz and funk. With the New Orleans EZX, Toontrack brings this unmistakable spirit directly into your studio - authentically captured under the direction of Terence Higgins (Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Dirty Dozen Brass Band), one of the most sought-after drummers in town.

Authentic sound from the capital of rhythm

No expense was spared for this EZX: the recordings were made in the legendary Esplanade Studios in the heart of the Tremé district. The studio is housed in a former church from the early 20th century and offers impressive acoustics with over 3,400 square feet and ceilings up to 8 meters high. To capture the characteristic sound of New Orleans, the drums were partially separated with gobos - creating a lively, yet close spatial sound that immediately inspires.

Two worlds: Tradition meets modernity

The New Orleans EZX consists of two extensive drum libraries - Traditional and Artist - and combines over a century of drum history in five unique kits.

  • Traditional: Historic instruments, including an original set from the archives of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, rare "sock cymbals " - an early forerunner of the Hi-Hat -, antique parade snares and even a bass drum straight from the stage of the legendary Preservation Hall. The Set is complemented by characteristic percussion such as washboard, cowbells, bottle, pandeiro and a handmade "junk" hi-hat for the typical swampy sound.
  • Artist: Modern kits inspired by sounds from the 1950s onwards, ideal for soul, R&B and funk - perfectly matched to current productions that still have their roots in traditional grooves.
