Vintage colour machine for sounds from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s

With Time Machine, Safari Audio delivers an effects plug-in that makes the sonic character of entire decades of recording history available at the click of a button. Rather than simply providing a basic LoFi effect, the plug-in combines decade-specific filters, saturation, compression and authentic noise recordings to create four clearly distinguishable sound profiles. In seconds, it transforms a modern track into a signal with historical flair, more patina and exactly the right amount of character that sterile productions often lack.

Four decades of sonic aesthetics in one plug-in

The particular appeal of Time Machine lies in the fact that it doesn’t simply apply a blanket degradation. Each era has been designed with its own sonic approach, so that the results sound musical and deliberate rather than arbitrarily distorted. Whether you just want to add a touch of vintage colour or audibly transport a track to a different era, Time Machine does exactly that – quickly, directly and without a complicated workflow.

This can be particularly exciting when it comes to drums, vocals, keys, guitars, samples, loops and entire buses, especially if you want to give a mix more contrast, history or a sense of style.

New soundscapes with Era mode

1950s for early recording aesthetics and focused sound images

The 1950s mode is based on early production aesthetics, with a more focused frequency response and a pared-back, deliberately characterful sound. Ideal for sounds intended to sound tighter, older and more immediate.

1960s for more warmth and organic vintage colouring

The 1960s mode brings more warmth and musical roundness into play. This setting is ideal for productions that call for classic retro charm, a tape-recorder feel and nostalgic studio colour.

1970s for dense textures and a more analogue feel

The 1970s mode delivers a richer, often slightly bolder colouring. The focus here is more on density, body and a distinctly perceptible vintage signature, which works particularly well on drums, keys and groups.

1980s for characterful edges and stylised lo-fi colour

In 1980s mode, the sound becomes more modern, distinctive and, in some cases, deliberately stylised. This is particularly interesting when you want signals to take on a bit more character, edge and charming imperfection, without sounding unmusical.

Era-specific processing rather than standard Lo-Fi

Filters, saturation and compression tailored to the respective decade

Each mode utilises its own combination of filtering, saturation and compression, tailored to the respective decade. This results not in interchangeable preset variations, but in genuinely distinct sonic responses. This is precisely what makes Time Machine so useful, as each era brings its own balance of presence, limitation, density and patina.

Authentic noise samples for a credible vintage atmosphere

Real noise rather than artificial nostalgia

A particularly standout feature is the authentic noise samples, which have been recorded specifically for each era. This noise doesn’t sound like a generic effect, but rather like a genuine component of the soundscape. Especially in transitions, intros, samples or deliberately stylised productions, this ensures significantly more credible retro vibes.

Fast workflow with musical control

Compression Dry/Wet, Drive, Trim and Blend

Despite its strong vintage focus, the interface remains modern and intuitive. The Dry/Wet compression control allows for precise adjustment of dynamic processing, whilst Input Drive and Output Trim help with level and tone. The Blend control allows the processed signal to be seamlessly mixed with the original. This means Time Machine works equally well for obvious retro effects as it does for more subtle refinements, where only a hint of a journey through time is intended to be added to the track.

Auto Gain for fair comparisons

Auto Gain helps keep the perceived loudness more stable during processing. This is particularly useful as it allows vintage colourations to be assessed based on sound rather than differences in volume.

Who will find Time Machine particularly exciting

Time Machine is ideal for producers, sound designers and musicians seeking historical timbres, a lo-fi aesthetic or deliberate contrasts with modern hi-fi tracks. The plug-in is a perfect fit for soul, indie, hip-hop, lo-fi, pop, retro sound design and experimental productions where a sound is intended to be not just clean, but memorable.

Interesting facts

What’s exciting about Time Machine is that the plug-in isn’t simply trying to make things sound worse. It doesn’t attempt to bluntly degrade the audio, but rather translates the distinctive characteristics of entire decades of recording into a fast, creative workflow. This is precisely why it’s not only suitable for obvious retro effects, but also as a subtle sound-shaping tool when a modern mix needs a little more soul, contrast and a sense of history.
