The Hoof Reaper from Earthquaker Devices is an amalgamation of two killer fuzz pedals and an octave up effect, which combine to create a pedal with a huge range of tones and textures. The two featured fuzz pedals are EQD’s Hoof and Tone Reaper units, both highly regarded in their own rite. The left side of the top plate houses the Hoof – a Germanium/Silicon hybrid effect bred to produce blistering overdriven leads and hot flustered fuzzes. The effect’s saturation can be increased using the Fuzz knob, whilst Tone is an EQ sweep (bass left, treble right) which works dynamically with the Shift knob to boost high frequencies and return some body to mid-range scoops.
The right side of the plate contains the Tone Reaper section. This vintage fuzz tone also has Germanium/Silicon components that create fine, spitting stings and warm guttural roars. Lengthen sustain and intensity using the Fuzz control, working with the Tone pot emphasise low or high frequency ranges. The Level knob sets the final output volume of the signal.
The bottom-centre of the pedals face has the Octave foot switch selector, placing the octave up effect into the signal path to produce subtle overtones or wah-wah squonks. As with both the Hoof and Tone Reaper sections, the Octave effect can be used on its own or in combination with one or both of the others. The seven possible effect combos are as follows; Hoof alone, Reaper alone, Octave alone, Reaper & Octave, Hoof & Octave, Hoof & Reaper and Hoof & Reaper & Octave. Earthquaker Devices are hand-made in Akron, Ohio, USA.
