Inspired by the Telefunken ELA M 250/251, Golden Age Premier introduces the GA-251, an incredibly high-quality replica with excellent sound that is available for a fraction of the price of the original. Handmade and equipped with high-end components, this large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone is the first choice for a variety of applications. Its K251 capsule provides both kidney and omnidirectional characteristics for even greater flexibility. The NOS Phillip 5480W super low noise tube provides a warm and balanced sound character during recording, while the robust construction guarantees a long lifetime. Of course, a proper power supply must not be missing and offers besides the power switch the possibility to switch between the characteristics or to activate the ground lift. Together with the high-quality cable, a microphone spider, a wooden case for storing the microphone and a case for storing all components, the GA-251 is a top microphone for the highest demands.
The Golden Age GA-251 is a classy microphone. While it is not cheap, it is a fraction of the price of the Telefunken ELA M 251 that it copies. The sound character is well balanced with a touch of colour. The solid low end and smooth top end is excellent on sources such as a female voice or 'cello. The noise level is very low for a valve/tube microphone, and better than the Warm Audio WA-251 and Peluso 22 251. There are some minor physical flaws, but I am willing to overlook those on a hand-made microphone. Including a third (figure-8) polar pattern would have been useful. The microphone is decently heavy, so a good stand or counterweight is needed.
