Suitable for a variety of recording sources
Whether in front of a guitar amp, as a vocal microphone for soloists or entire groups, as drum overhead or at the piano, the R1 cuts a fine figure on a variety of sources.
That's not broken - that's the way it's supposed to be!
At a time when many users are accustomed to the often very high-pitched sound of current microphones (especially most beginners' large diaphragm microphones), the first auditory impression of a ribbon microphone can be quite confusing. But this actually very natural sound is something you wouldn't want to do without very quickly. Often terms like soft butter, round and warm are used to describe the sound impression.
A specialist in its field
The R1 features an incredibly fine 1.8 micron aluminum diaphragm. This results in a higher than usual roll off frequency (approx. 7KHz) and therefore delivers a more open and natural sound than is usually expected from a ribbon.
On the other side, however, it should be noted that a passive ribbon needs a rather high gain. In order to use such a microphone properly, a good microphone preamplifier should be available. Most ''onboard preamps'' quickly reach their limits here. It should also be mentioned that a ribbon microphone, whether active or passive, cheap or expensive, is not necessarily a typical all-rounder - rather a specialist in its field. And the R1 is one of the spearheads here, especially at such a low price.
