The semi-acoustic bass – also known as a semi-hollow bass or hollowbody bass – bridges the tonal space between traditional acoustic basses and modern solidbody instruments. Favoured in pop, jazz, rock and many other styles, these bass guitars come in diverse shapes and finishes, with unique tonal and construction features that set them apart.
The terms acoustic bass, semi-acoustic bass and hollowbody bass can be confusing, as they are sometimes used interchangeably. Still, each design has distinct characteristics.
A semi-hollow bass features a hollow or partially hollow body with traditional f-holes but also includes a solid centre block and a slimmer body depth. This reduces resonance compared to a pure hollowbody, but both constructions allow players to benefit from acoustic character while keeping feedback under control at higher stage volumes.
Hollowbody basses are known for their warm, resonant tone with a vocal-like quality – blending the depth of acoustic instruments with electric bass punch. They are especially popular in jazz, blues, rockabilly and many other genres.
The acoustic bass differs in design: built like a steel-string acoustic guitar, it has the largest resonating body among basses, delivering strong projection without amplification. While pickups can be added, it doesn’t offer the tonal flexibility of a semi-acoustic bass.
A semi-acoustic bass projects more naturally than a solidbody bass, but still requires an amplifier for rehearsals or concerts. Its unplugged volume is not enough to compete with a full band or carry to an audience. For true unplugged performance with sufficient projection, an acoustic bass is a better option.
Semi-acoustic basses use magnetic pickups, just like electric basses and guitars. This means they can be strung with standard electric bass string sets. Players often choose between roundwound strings for a bright, punchy tone with more finger noise, or flatwound strings for a smoother, warmer sound with less handling noise.
Semi-acoustic basses may be less common than solid or fully acoustic models, but they have been embraced by several legendary musicians. Paul McCartney made the Höfner Violin Bass iconic during his time with The Beatles. Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane built his unique tone with one, while Chris Wood of Medeski, Martin & Wood often swapped his upright bass for a semi-hollow alternative.
Many renowned manufacturers produce semi-acoustic basses in both classic and modern designs. Some of the most notable include:
Epiphone: Known for the Jack Casady Signature Bass (also available in a left-handed version) and the Viola Bass, beloved by fans of beat music.
Guild: Praised for craftsmanship, especially with the Guild Starfire.
Ibanez: Offers wide variety and affordability with the Artcore Series.
Hagstrom: The Swedish brand offers Viking basses with stylish looks, versatile switching and vintage-inspired tones.
Höfner: Inventor of the legendary Violin Bass, also producing the Club Bass, the Verythin and the versatile Ignition Series.
