PAR Spotlights

This is the original form of stage lighting. Because of their shape, these large lamp housings are often called “cans”. A glance at the ceiling of a theatre or TV studio shows they are still widely used today. The length of PAR spotlights varies by model, and there are versions for both indoor and outdoor applications. While older PAR spotlights were heavy and cumbersome, today’s housings are made of lightweight aluminum, making them ideal not only for large stages but also for mobile setups. The fixtures are mounted on truss via their bracket and manually adjusted. Unlike moving lights, the beam of PAR spotlights cannot be controlled remotely.

For mobile systems for DJs and small bands, PAR spotlights are often grouped in fours or sixes and are frequently combined with modern lighting effects.

Lamps and Color Filters

The lamp size must correspond to the PAR housing specification. On stage, the most common are PAR-36, PAR-56 and PAR-64 models, each with different diameters. While PAR-36 operates with low voltage, PAR-56 glass lamps (for smaller spots) and PAR-64 with either glass lamps or aluminum reflectors (for larger areas) are widely used and should be chosen according to the application. In addition to the lamps, a color filter in the form of a gel sheet should be selected and placed into the holder provided.

LED PAR Spotlights

LEDs have long established themselves in stage lighting, thanks to their flexibility. No color gels are required in front of white lights, as LED PAR spotlights cover the entire spectrum directly. With suitable remote control, countless moods can be created, planned either per song or for an entire show.

Advantages of LEDs

  • Lower energy use: LEDs save both the environment and electricity bills, consuming up to 95% less power than traditional lamps. They are also longer lasting, often with a lifespan exceeding 10,000 hours.
  • Less heat and weight: Reduced power use means less heat on stage. While old PAR cans with halogen lamps used to overheat, LEDs remain cool and efficient. They are also typically lighter and more compact than conventional fixtures.
  • Brightness and dimming: Thanks to their efficiency, LED spotlights deliver high light output. Unlike color gels in front of halogen lamps that reduce brightness, LEDs produce colors directly, with no loss of intensity. LEDs can also be dimmed smoothly without an external dimmer. Many models now feature RGBW technology with an additional white channel for natural white tones.
  • Cost: While LED fixtures are more expensive upfront, their durability quickly offsets the investment.

Disadvantages of LEDs

  • PAR spotlights with lenses and reflectors can focus light over longer distances, while LEDs are more suited for shorter-range lighting. In addition, the color temperature of LEDs may shift when dimmed, unlike halogen lamps with gels.

LED Floodlights and Pinspots

For outdoor applications, IP65-certified housings are essential. LED floodlights are ideal for illuminating buildings or trees in vibrant colors. Indoors, they create impressive wash effects by lighting walls or large objects.

Pinspots focus light on a small point, making them perfect for use with mirror balls or other reflective objects to scatter light around the room.

Control

DMX control has become the standard in LED lighting. Operated via a controller similar to an audio mixing desk, DMX controllers manage visual effects precisely.

Many fixtures also feature built-in auto programs alongside 3-pin DMX connectors, providing color variety without external gear. Often, a microphone is built in so lighting can follow the beat of the music.

Planning and Placement

Not only the desired effects are important, but also the performers’ position on stage, ensuring they are clearly visible and not just colorful silhouettes. The stage should be lit from the front edge or side with white light at an appropriate angle. All additional colors can then be added creatively.
