The Fender Lee Sklar Precision Bass RW Natural is a faithful replica of the iconic P-Bass, which Lee Sklar has described as his absolute favourite for over 50 years and which he has immortalised on countless timeless recordings. Modified on the basis of a ’62 Precision Bass, this instrument features all the alterations and modifications of the original to replicate its unique sound, look and feel as closely as possible. This instrument from the Fender Stories Collection is, of course, supplied in an authentic vintage-style tweed case.
The basic design of the Lee Sklar Precision Bass is based on the original 1962 P-Bass specification and features a solid alder body with a four-screw-fixed maple neck. This naturally features an authentic ’62 C-profile and a rosewood fingerboard with 20 frets. Naturally, the same mandolin-style fret wire is used here as the one Lee retrofitted onto his bass. The classic 7.25-inch fingerboard radius also follows the historical model and ensures an authentic playing feel from the headstock to the neck joint.
The two EMG active Lee Sklar P-Bass pickups in the neck and bridge positions deliver astonishing brightness and clarity. Developed in collaboration with Lee Sklar and EMG, the split-coil pickup is active and, unlike the classic Precision Bass configuration, features two of them. The control plate has also been adapted and features two volume controls for separate adjustment of the neck and bridge positions; in addition, there is a shared treble control for both pickups.
The hardware specifications of the Fender Lee Sklar Precision Bass are also highly customised. The reissue model features a solid BadAss II hardtail bridge to ensure the most direct possible transmission of string resonance into the body. In addition, the two Jim Dunlop Straploks ensure the instrument is held securely on the strap. A particularly practical feature, however, is the Hipshot BT3 Bass Xtender. With the help of this handy little tool, the low E string can be quickly and precisely retuned from D to E by flipping a lever.
