What Is an LED Floodlight?

An LED floodlight is a luminaire designed for large-area illumination in indoor and outdoor environments. It uses LEDs (light-emitting diodes), which provide high luminous efficacy, long service life and energy-efficient operation. LED floodlights are widely used for area lighting and broad, even illumination.

They are used in a wide range of applications. Outdoors, LED floodlights are suitable for illuminating buildings, façades, sports facilities, access areas and advertising surfaces. Thanks to their robust construction and suitable protection ratings, many models are designed for long-term outdoor use.

Indoors, LED floodlights are used in warehouses, workshops, garages and other large spaces to provide uniform and powerful illumination. They are also used in stage lighting, at events and in temporary lighting installations.

What Should Be Considered When Buying an LED Floodlight?

When selecting an LED floodlight, several technical factors should be taken into account. One of the main criteria is brightness, specified in lumens. It should be matched to the size of the area to be illuminated and the intended lighting purpose.

Colour temperature is also an important consideration. Warm white light (2700 to 3000 Kelvin) is suitable for atmospheric lighting, while daylight white or cool white light (5000 to 6500 Kelvin) is typically used in work areas, security applications and functional illumination.

The beam angle determines how broadly the light is distributed. A narrower beam angle is suitable for targeted illumination, whereas a wider angle is advantageous for achieving the most even illumination possible across larger surfaces.

Energy efficiency should also be considered, as it affects power consumption and operating costs. For outdoor use, attention should also be paid to a suitable IP protection rating. For many exterior applications, models rated IP65 or IP66 are appropriate, as they are protected against dust and water jets.

Depending on the intended application, additional features such as motion sensors, adjustable mounting brackets or control options via app or DMX may also be relevant when selecting a suitable LED floodlight.
