With the Drum & Bass EZX, Toontrack expands EZdrummer 3 and Superior Drummer 3 with a sound pack that combines the character of classic breakbeats with the precision of modern drum & bass productions. Developed in collaboration with drummer Andy Gangadeen and producer Peter “Erb N Dub” Chapman, the result is a library specifically geared towards contemporary drum & bass, jungle, breakbeat and UK dance sounds.
At the heart of the package are four acoustic drum kits, complemented by a selection of electronic drum machine sounds, percussion and effects. This allows users to create both classic breakbeat grooves and modern, precise drum & bass tracks.
The combination of real drum recordings and electronic sound sources opens up numerous possibilities for productions ranging from liquid drum & bass, neurofunk and dancefloor to jungle. The sounds deliver both the necessary punch for contemporary productions and the lively character of classic recordings.
Sonically, the Drum & Bass EZX draws on the recordings that defined the genre. Influences from legendary breakbeats such as the ‘Amen Break’ or ‘Funky Drummer’ are reflected not only in the playing style but also in the overall production philosophy.
For the recordings at Rimshot Studio in the UK, vintage Decca tube preamps were used alongside a modern SSL console. The resulting saturation and natural compression give the drums a characterful sound reminiscent of classic sample sources. In addition, microphone crosstalk was deliberately incorporated to recreate the openness and movement of historic breakbeat recordings.
In addition to the samples, the expansion includes an extensive collection of MIDI grooves and fills recorded by Andy Gangadeen. The patterns are specifically tailored to the included kits and make targeted use of additional elements such as side snare, electronic percussion and effect sounds.
This provides ready-to-use grooves that can serve as a starting point for your own tracks or be integrated directly into existing productions.
The Drum & Bass EZX is rounded off by numerous presets by Peter Chapman. They offer a range of sound characters, from natural and open to heavily processed and club-ready. This allows you to quickly find suitable drum sounds and integrate them directly into the mix.
