With the Microwave 1 plug-in, Waldorf is bringing a true cult synth back into the present day. Even the original Waldorf Microwave left its mark on countless productions in the early 90s with its distinctive character, its raw digital edge and its unique analogue bite. It is precisely this sound that has been meticulously recreated for the plug-in from the original hardware, including the quirks and sonic characteristics that make the Microwave so sought-after to this day.
With Version 2, Waldorf is now taking a significant step further. The distinctive core sound remains intact, whilst new creative possibilities have been added, making the instrument more modern, more flexible and even more inspiring for everyday studio use.
The Waldorf Microwave 1 plug-in is based on a meticulous recreation of the original hardware. Every sonic detail has been analysed and modelled to preserve precisely the sound that has made the Microwave so distinctive for decades. This blend of proprietary digital and analogue designs gives the instrument its own sonic language, which remains instantly recognisable even today.
The plugin is an exciting source of sounds with edge, character and historical depth, particularly for productions in synthwave, electronica, ambient, techno, pop, film music and experimental timbres.
One of the most significant new features is the expansion of polyphony. Instead of the original 8 voices, up to 32 voices are now available. This makes the plug-in significantly more flexible for broad pads, more complex chords and modern arrangements. A particular strength here is that micro-timing and variations are preserved, so the sound doesn’t come across as sterile or over-smoothed.
With the new multi-mode options such as Round Robin and Random Robin, the instrument gains greater dynamism and more playful variation. This ensures more lively progressions and opens up new avenues for rhythmic, sequential and organic sound design.
A particularly powerful update is the polyphonic arpeggiator for each instrument part. This allows you to create more complex patterns, more musical movements and significantly more exciting layered structures. The plugin becomes noticeably more flexible, particularly in multi-part setups.
In addition, there is now a global arpeggiator featuring round-robin modes. This significantly expands the performance and sound design possibilities once again, making the instrument even more interesting for modern productions and more experimental sequences.
Another new feature is a creative delay effect with diffusion and pitch shifting. This allows the typical Microwave sound to be shaped not only to be wider and more spacious, but also significantly more atmospheric and wild. This is a particularly powerful tool for pads, sequences and expansive effect layers.
All features from the free update 1.3.0 are already included in the new version. These include a completely revamped preset browser with favourites management and the ability to load individual instrument parts directly. Especially with a synth that has so much character, quick access to suitable sounds is incredibly valuable in day-to-day use.
The new multi-level Undo/Redo makes working significantly safer and more relaxed. Sound design thrives on experimentation, and this feature is a real asset for precisely that.
Another major workflow update is the ability to edit multiple instrument parts simultaneously. This saves time and makes complex sound structures much easier to manage in day-to-day studio work.
Added to this are new presets by Chuck Zwicky, the renowned mixer, engineer and producer. This isn’t just a nice bonus, but also a great source of inspiration for anyone who wants to put the expanded Microwave sound to immediate musical use.
