The API 527A compressor brings the dynamic processing of the large API compressors into the compact 500 Series format. It combines modern VCA compression with classic control characteristics and offers a level of flexibility that is usually associated with much larger devices. Whether on single tracks, drum bus, bass, vocals or in a stereo setup, the 527A can be customised for a wide range of production situations.
A special feature is the switchable feed forward and feed back compression. While the Feed Forward mode is more direct, precise and somewhat more assertive, the Feed Back mode delivers the softer and more musical control behaviour of classic compressors.
Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release and Output Level each have 31 detent positions. This allows settings to be documented quickly and restored exactly for later sessions.
The API 527A offers a wide control range, from subtle dynamics control to significant limiting. Attack and release are designed as dual concentric controls and allow quick access to both time parameters without taking up additional space on the front panel.
You can also switch between Hard Knee and Soft Knee. Soft Knee ensures a smooth transition to compression and is ideal for transparent level control. Hard Knee intervenes much more directly and enables tighter dynamic processing with a stronger limiter character.
Thanks to attack times of 1 to 25 milliseconds and release times of 0.3 to 3 seconds, the 527A covers both fast transient control and musical level processing over longer periods of time. The ratio ranges from virtually unaltered signal processing to true limiting.
Another advantage in everyday studio use is the control behaviour of the device. The output level remains largely constant even when the threshold and ratio are changed. This means that compression settings can be assessed while working on the mix without major volume jumps affecting perception.
A key component of the API sound is the patented THRUST® technology. A special filter is inserted into the sidechain before the RMS detector. This means that low-frequency signal components have less of an effect on the control, giving bass drums, bass guitars and other low-frequency signals more punch and definition.
Especially with drum groups, rock productions or modern pop mixes, the THRUST® function ensures that compression works audibly without robbing the mix of its energy. The result is often punchier, more open and livelier.
Several API 527A or API 527 modules can be linked together using the integrated link function. This makes the compressor suitable not only for mono signals, but also for stereo busses and complex multi-channel setups.
Unlike classic master-slave solutions, the 527A combines the control voltages of all linked devices. Changes to parameters such as Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release, Knee or THRUST® therefore affect the behaviour of all linked units. This ensures stable stereo imaging and consistent control behaviour across multiple channels.
The IN/BYP switch on the front offers more than just an ordinary bypass. In normal IN mode, the compressor works actively in the signal path. If the compression is deactivated, the audio signal continues to pass through the electronics, but without gain reduction.
The 527Aalso has a relay-switched hard bypass. In this state, the input signal is routed directly to the output and bypasses the entire audio stage of the module. This allows precise A/B comparisons between the processed and unprocessed signal at any time.
The discrete API 2510 and 2520 operational amplifiers are used in the audio signal path. These components have characterised the API sound for decades and stand for high reliability and a direct, powerful sound.
The concept is complemented by a 10-segment LED meter that displays either gain reduction or output level. A separate overload indicator warns of critical level peaks and facilitates level control during recording and mixing.
