Dropping one of these springs into the tremolo hole before screwing the whammy bar into place ensures there's a good amount of tension on the whammy bar, preventing it from having too much "play" in the bar when using it and with the added benefit of preventing your whammy bar from swinging too wildly when you are moving around.
