Yamaha | MODX M | Sound Demo - Hear the Future of Expression
The Yamaha MODX M7 at a glance:
With the MODX M7, Yamaha presents the latest generation of its popular performance synthesizer. This new M series model appeals equally to keyboardists, pianists, and synth enthusiasts, offering over 3000 high-quality sounds, a premium keyboard, and deep sound-shaping capabilities. The 76-key FSB keyboard is velocity-sensitive and delivers an excellent playing feel. The redesigned control panel features numerous innovations for a smoother and more efficient workflow, making live and studio performance more intuitive than ever. The M series offers significantly more controls than its predecessors. Notably, it features six encoders below the display and eight faders (previously four). The Super Knob now includes an LED ring that displays even small value changes. The registers for the four knobs have been expanded to 2×4 fixed and 2×4 freely assignable parameters, while Scene buttons allow you to store and recall eight settings per part. The already rich sound engine now includes the new AN-X Engine, a tribute to the analog classics of the 70s and 80s. Yamaha has also introduced an Easy Mode for the FM-X engine, making it simpler to create great sounds from complex FM synthesis. The powerful arpeggiator works across eight parts simultaneously and offers nearly 11,000 presets. The MODX M is fully backward compatible with previous Yamaha models, including MODX, MODX+, Montage, Montage M, Motif XF, Motif XS, and MOXF allowing you to continue using your favorite sounds.
The heart of the MODX M is, of course, the digital sound generation, which now includes AN-X synthesis in addition to AWM2 and FM-X:
The AWM2 engine offers an extremely successful all-round sound from music history with pretty much everything you would expect from a full-blown workstation. The richness of sound detail is realized with up to 128 elements per part, resulting in super smooth transitions and sound progressions. This naturally also benefits the included piano sounds.
With the FM-X engine, Yamaha's heritage of the cult synthesis of the DX-7 lives on. Once again, you have access to up to eight operators and 88 FM algorithms. Yamaha has developed the EASY MODE especially for the FM-X Engine, which makes it easy for beginners in particular to elicit usable sounds from the complex FM synthesis.
The AN-X Engine is fully dedicated to analog sounds, without wanting to be a copy of Yamaha's own classic AN1x. The engine offers three oscillators, each with five waveforms plus PWM, hardsync and a noise generator. Two filters with ten filter types form the rich basic sound of the tone generators. This sound generation is rounded off with a ring modulator, FM and waveshaper. Two ADSR envelopes and two LFOs are used for modulation.
Yamaha has equipped the MODX M with plenty of voices. These are divided into 128 voices for AWM2, 128 voices for FM-X and 12 voices for the AN-X engine. The sound memory should be sufficient for the time being with 10.7 GB preset waveforms and 2.1 GB flash memory for user waveforms. The MODX M comes with 3427 sounds ex works, so there's something for everyone. There are 640 memory locations for user presets. Effects are known to be the salt in the soup, but in this case it can be a little more. Reverb (12 types), Variation (88 types), Insertion A (88 types), Insertion B (89 types) and master (26 types) are available. These include various Delay algorithms, modulation effects such as chorus, Flanger and Chorus as well as distortion effects. There is an EQ with 2 or 3 bands for each of the 8 parts and a 5-band EQ for the master.
Super Knob
Motion Control Synthesis Engine
The Motion Control Synthesis Engine (MCSE) allows for highly expressive, real-time sound interaction. Motion Sequences enable tempo-synced automation of synth and effect parameters, while the Super Knob controls dozens of modulations simultaneously with a single turn. The Envelope Follower adds dynamic modulation, reacting to external audio signals or other parts. Together, these features make the MCSE a powerful tool for complex and expressive sound design.
Realtime faders & controllers
The expanded control section features 2×4 fixed and 2×4 assignable parameters for the encoders and eight responsive faders twice as many as before. This layout provides direct access to essential functions without relying solely on the touchscreen. It also integrates a 16-track mixer (8 internal, 8 MIDI/USB) with full effects management for a streamlined workflow.
7" touchscreen
Everything at a glance with the 7" touchscreen
The large 7-inch touchscreen serves as the central hub for navigation and sound editing. With crisp graphics and responsive operation, it provides immediate access to all functions and visual feedback for real-time performance adjustments.
Categories & Live Sets
The MODX M’s over 3000 sounds are organized into clear categories for quick navigation. Custom sounds can also be categorized for better organization. More than 8000 Live Sets allow you to create multi-part performance setups, ideal for stage use. With integrated transport controls, you can operate your DAW and the internal motion sequencer directly from the keyboard.
Professional connections
The rear panel offers a comprehensive set of connections: inputs for sustain, expression, and two footswitches, plus MIDI In/Out and USB ports for seamless integration with DAWs and external gear. The stereo line inputs enable audio processing through the synth, while stereo outputs (¼" jacks) provide pristine sound output. Audio can also be exchanged with a DAW via USB, featuring one stereo input and five stereo outputs (24-bit / 44.1 kHz). A USB device port allows memory expansion and connection of additional controllers or keyboards.
