The analog synthesizer at a glance

In the Implexus, Majella Audio combines the best of the East and West Coast philosophy in a compact, excellent sounding analog synthesizer. The handmade in Holland instrument convinces with high-quality workmanship and draws attention with the yellow-orange LED wreaths above some parameters visually directly.

Pure Fatness

The analog sound generation consists of the Basic Oscillator, which generates square, sine and sawtooth and the much more complex Complex Oscillator. The latter is continuously variable from square to sine to triangle and has a downstream wavefolder. The two big controls Waveshaper and Wavefolder can be animated via envelope and LFOs, which leads to subtle to extreme sound changes. The course of the modulation of these two parameters is visualized in the LED wreath. Both oscillators are adjustable in the range of six octaves and have fine controls. Linear FM between the two tone generators is also adjustable. Those who value particularly precise oscillator tuning will appreciate the built-in tun er, which allows the correct pitch to be set quickly. Attached to the Complex Oscillator is a sub-oscillator that generates a square waveform exactly one octave below the frequency of the Complex Oscillator. A mixer feeds all three sound sources into the filter at the desired level. The filter of the Implexus works either with lowpass or highpass characteristic. Thanks to the OTA construction, the filter goes sonically in the direction of old Roland synthesizers without deliberately imitating them. Despite the slope of 12dB, the filter tends to a discreet self-oscillation without becoming obtrusive. The signal path is completed by the digital stereo delay. Through a discreet but steady modulation it has the character of a tape echo and sounds just great! The delay can also be synchronized to one of five BPM dividers at the touch of a button. Without synchronization, the delay period ranges from flanger-like sounds up to one second.

Modulation sources

Two almost identical ADSR envelopes are at work in the Implexus. In the shortest settings they shine with a very percussive, clicking character, which is perfectly suited for fast sequences with 1/16th resolution; of course the control times also reach ambient realms. Envelope 1 is actually the Mod EG and is used with filters, harmonics, folders and Pitch. In addition, the Mod EG is equipped with a loop mode; in this mode, the instrument also distinguishes whether a Gate is present or not. Without Gate the envelope behaves like a free-running LFO, with Gate Attack and Decay is looped until Gate ends again. Envelope 2 aka Amp EG is fixed to the VCA. Both envelopes can be dosed individually with velocity. In addition to the envelopes, there are two similar LFOs with five waveforms each, which either run freely or are set to one of five BPM dividers via a button. An extra vibrato LFO is built in for modulating the pitch.

Connections for Studio and Eurorack

The rear panel of the Implexus is pleasantly versatile. Due to the stereo delay alone, it is recommended to operate the Implexus in stereo at the mixer or audio interface. The connection should be made with TRS cables! MIDI communicates via USB and the familiar DIN socket. The small sockets are all Eurorack compatible and equally cope with semi-modular synthesizers: Clock, LFO2, Basic Oscillator and Mod Envelope are available as outputs; as control voltage inputs there are Gate, Global 1V/Okt, Basic VCO 1V/Okt, Velocity, Harmonics, Folder, Bias and Cutoff. So nothing stands in the way of expanding the sonic possibilities with a few modules.
