With Cubby, Safari Audio launches its new SuperKeys Series, delivering a software instrument that brings the playful charm of early home keyboards into a modern production environment. The sound is bright, direct, nostalgic and deliberately accessible. It is precisely this that creates that special appeal, blending early digital aesthetics, LoFi warmth and dreamy singer-songwriter magic.
Cubby isn’t a no-nonsense all-round keyboard, but an instrument with a distinct character. A few notes, a bit of spring, a touch of detune, plus width in the stereo image – and you’ve got a sound that feels like a forgotten TV tune, an old games soundtrack or a charming bedroom keyboard.
Cubby relies on a deliberately minimalist yet musically powerful sound set. Instead of overwhelming you with endless pages of presets, you get four instantly recognisable basic sounds that can be quickly incorporated into your track.
The piano sounds bright, compact and direct. It fits quickly into the arrangement and is ideal for simple hooks, chords and rhythmic sketches.
The flute delivers a clear, crisp and melodic tone that’s particularly well-suited to simple leads and catchy motifs.
With ‘Fantasy’, Cubby takes on a distinctly dreamier quality. This sound brings synthetic colour and a cinematic sense of space to the mix and is perfect for pads, intros and nostalgic melodies.
The Violin delivers a deliberately nostalgic ensemble character that blends particularly beautifully with Spring and De-tune. Ideal for floating chords and cinematic Lo-Fi moments.
Cubby features a built-in spring reverb effect that instantly adds spatial depth and that slightly bouncy vintage character to the sound. This complements the instrument’s fundamental tone perfectly and very quickly transforms simple chords into something atmospheric.
The Width control allows you to specifically widen the stereo image, making chords sound broader and more expansive. De-tune adds just the right amount of drift and wobble to the signal. This creates that slightly wobbly, dreamy Lo-Fi sound that sets Cubby apart from many clean digital instruments.
