Product information - Gibson 1939 J-55 FVS

Acoustic guitar, custom shop, round-shoulder, Adirondack spruce top, mahogany body, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, case included.

With the reproduction of a 1939 J-55 , the traditional American manufacturer Gibson has succeeded in reviving a true rarity of the golden age of guitars with original equipment and detailed workmanship. In the 1930s, the coveted round-shoulder model represented one of the four popular Gibson jumbo guitars and was in great demand especially in the folk and country scene. With its striking appearance and unique sound, the Gibson 1939 J-55 FVS, as an authentic replica, looks like an old treasure from days gone by with the Gibson charm that has always been famous. A sturdy case and a Gibson Accessory Kit are included.

Gibson 1939 J-55 FVS front
Adirondack spruce top (American red spruce).

An Adirondack spruce top for a dynamic sound

The coarse-grained spruce from North America was already very popular at the beginning of the 20th century for the construction of high-quality musical instruments and, due to its coarse and even structure, produces an extremely fast response, which is supported by a Scalloped-Advanced-X-Bracing. The expressive clear tone is particularly pronounced in the mid and treble frequencies and reverberates for a long time in the overtones due to the thin nitro-lacquer which favors the vibration behavior of the wood. Through a thermo treatment the instrument can already exploit the full sound potential of the woods, giving the impression that it has been played for decades. The chic faded-vintage sunburst finish creates a fine interplay between the woods and rounds off the authenticity of the Gibson 1939 J-55 FVS perfectly.

Finest mahogany wood for warm bass.

Mahogany back and sides

In order to produce a balanced sound with rich and warm basses, many guitar types are still built with a mahogany body, which in the case of the J-55 with its discreet style perfectly matches the power potential of the large construction. The finely grained wood builds up an amazing dynamic, so that even single notes can unfold completely without much effort and the instrument is also very well suited for pickings. The wafer-thin lacquer is also very noticeable in the construction of the body, allowing the wood to move freely, so that the sound is enriched and completed by a strong foundation. Separated by cream-colored single-ply bindings, the dark body is in balanced harmony with the other components of the overall work.

A mahogany neck with Luthiers-Choice-AJ profile.

A handy neck with comfortable features

A robust mahogany neck with a Luthiers-Choice-AJ profile and a noble ebony fingerboard provide incomparable playing comfort. Thanks to a generous saddle width of 44.95 mm, the instrument is easy to play up to the highest of the 19 frets. The relatively long scale length of 647.7 mm allows the player to master even complex fingerings in all positions without much effort. A bone saddle and a corresponding bridge inlay allow perfect intonation over the entire fingerboard and stand for the incomparable quality of the traditional manufacturer. Fine mother-of-pearl inlays have been worked into the fingerboard for orientation, which subtly emphasize the dark appearance of the ebony in contrast.

Tradition and craftsmanship.

Highlights and attention to detail

Entirely in the style of the 1930s, the guitar is equipped with a mackerel-look transparent pickguard, which creates an incomparable interplay with the fine faded vintage sunburst finish in a very harmonious way. Another eye-catching feature is the ebony moustache bridge, which with its filigree appearance is another trademark of the manufacturer and fully embodies the craftsmanship of the early Gibson Master Builders. Another sign of the long company tradition is the old company logo on the characteristic headstock, which is equipped with authentic nickel tuners with butterbean buttons. A sturdy moulded case and a Gibson Accessory Kit perfectly round off the entire product and offer the greatest comfort for this unique masterpiece.
