Inspired by the spirit of the great analogue synths of the 1970s, Super Chunk delivers exactly the kind of bass sound that instantly pushes a track to the forefront: deep, full-bodied, rough when desired, and wonderfully direct under your fingers.
Super Chunk is part of the new SuperKeys Series and is aimed at anyone who wants to quickly find a bass sound that doesn’t just sit quietly in the background, but moves the room and carries the song.
At the heart of Super Chunk lies a triple-oscillator engine that has been deliberately tuned for character rather than compromise. Instead of endless complexity, you get three clearly defined sound building blocks that feel instantly musical.
The Bite oscillator delivers the upper harmonics – precisely the component that gives the bass bite, contour and presence. Particularly in dense arrangements, this layer helps ensure that the sound not only fills out the low end but also remains clearly audible in the mix.
Sub is the actual foundation. This is where the deep, room-filling low end comes from, making both the kick and the bass sound bigger together. This section is designed for productions that don’t want to hold back in the low end.
It’s no coincidence that the third oscillator is called Chunk. It delivers the thick, woody mid-range that gives the sound life, mass and that slightly rich cohesion. It is precisely this element that often ensures a bass is not only deep but also musically tangible.
The built-in drive circuit ranges from pleasant warmth to significantly wilder behaviour. This allows you to either thicken the Super Chunk in a classic analogue style or deliberately push it in a more aggressive, grittier direction. The Ring Mod introduces a feature that can quickly transform a rich bass synth into a sound design tool. By adjusting the pitch and amount, you can create metallic, non-linear and slightly distorted textures that are particularly exciting when you want the bass to sound not just deep, but also distinctive and unusual.
To bring more life to the sound, Super Chunk comes equipped with vibrato, glide and even spring reverb. The vibrato creates movement and an organic drift, whilst glide and legato make monophonic playing beautifully expressive; and the spring reverb gives the sound its own, slightly retro spatial quality when needed. This is particularly invaluable for leads, transitions or quirky hook basslines.
Particularly exciting is the slightly nerdy-sounding ‘Geeky Glasses’ system. Behind it lies a clever modulation approach in which the ADSR envelope specifically pushes parameters to predefined target values. Instead of fiddly matrix menus, you simply specify where the modulation should be directed. This feels much more direct and quickly delivers impressive results.
With Mod 1 and Mod 2, you can apply the envelope to the filter, drive and ring mod. The white controls define the direction and intensity of the modulation. It’s musical, fast and, in the best sense, immediately audible.
Naturally, a bass synth like this also requires a powerful filter. Super Chunk features a ladder-style filter with cutoff, resonance and its own rich, saturated drive. This not only allows the three oscillators to be blended together, but also enables them to be shaped with great precision, from soft and round to biting and resonant.
