After some unsatisfactory experiences with other MIDI interfaces, it was great to get this out of the box, plug it in, and find it works straight away with no faffing. Have used with iPad and iMac, as well as in 'standalone' mode, and no issues whatsoever. Really solid build quality too.
The ESI M8U EX 16: Is a very flexible midi interface with no drivers that works! I plugged my master keyboard straight into it, and it sends midi out to 11 hardware units - Synths, sequencers, groove boxes, drum machines, pedals, fx units etc.- with no problem. All devices send a receive midi perfectly. It was as easy as that. Oh, and it's orange!!!
This ESI interface replaced several other USB MIDI devices, some quite sub-standard ones, which failed with sysex transfers. I could not be more pleased with this one, which is connected up on 15 out of the 16 ports. I particularly love the auto detection of inputs and outputs, and the USB3.0 hubs have allowed me to connect up other USB-MIDI only devices with ease. Genuinely flawless piece of equipment
Works ok. Jitter performance is not as good as some interfaces, like Steinberg Midex, but latency is good. About 1-4ms jitter instead of around 1ms with the Steinberg. However, the ESI is more compatible with Windows 10, unlike the Midex.
Having the interface decide which connections are inputs and outputs is somewhat confusing, as it sometimes makes the wrong choice and won't play any midi for a little while. The solution is just to keep sending midi from that output until it gets the idea and starts working.
Overall recommended though, it's about as good as a modern generic USB interface gets. Would be nice to have improved jitter though, and the ability to permanently set in/out for the midi ports.
