STRYMON NightSky

Comprehensive reverb workstation with a modulation section and step sequencer

The revolutionary Strymon NightSky is a comprehensive workstation for experimental reverb sounds, offering extensive sound-shaping capabilities. Equipped with a modulation section, an 8-step sequencer with glide function, and an additional 4-pole resonance filter, the NightSky covers an enormous sonic range, from classic reverb sounds right through to variably modulated experimental sounds, creating virtually endless possibilities for individual sound design. An expression pedal socket is provided for intuitive control of individual effect parameters, whilst the NightSky’s MIDI interface ensures absolute flexibility when used in conjunction with other control devices, and the 16 internal memory slots for sound creations can be expanded to up to 300 MIDI-selectable memory slots for later use.

Reverb Textures & Pitch

The Strymon NightSky offers three different reverb textures, which form the basis of each patch. ‘Sparse’ provides a spacious reverb with a delayed attack, giving legato notes a clean reverb and creating delay-like echoes, particularly when played staccato. Classic plate reverb with a fast attack is the speciality of Dense mode, which provides the ideal foundation for ambient sounds. Those looking for slowly building, atmospheric reverb sounds, on the other hand, will be delighted with Diffuse mode. In addition, the NightSky’s Decay section offers three different quantise modes for the reverb tail, allowing you to adjust the pitch using the Pitch control either continuously, in semitones, or within a selected scale spanning up to two octaves.

Mod section with selectable waveforms

To add interesting modulation effects to the reverb sound, the NightSky features a Mod section that can assign six different waveforms to the LFO. Alongside the classics – triangle, square and sawtooth – there is a Random mode for randomly selected values and even an Envelope mode that reacts individually to the notes played. The Depth control determines the sensitivity of the effect. The selected modulation effect can be assigned either to the reverb tail, the pitch or the filter section to create, for example, variable reverb times, wild pitch experiments or wah-like changes to the filter.

Strymon Nightsky Controls
The Strymon NightSky’s comprehensive control panel is divided into sections for Mod, Decay, Tone, Voice and Mix.

Shimmer & Glimmer

The Voice section offers a number of useful tools for giving the selected reverb effect its own unique sonic character. The two selectable Shimmer effects, ‘Input’ and ‘Regen’, can be added to the incoming signal at harmonic intervals and can be selected within a range of one octave above and below the source note using the Interval control, to give the reverb effect additional width and depth. The Glimmer effect adds further harmonic depth, emphasising either the high frequencies for dreamy soundscapes or the low-frequency component of the signal for synth-like depth. In addition, there is a Drive switch on board which adds extra saturation to the NightSky’s signal either before or after the reverb core.

8-step sequencer

The Strymon NightSky’s internal step sequencer greatly expands the effect’s range of functions and can serve both as a storage facility for various presets and for creating interesting effect progressions. Up to 16 steps can be programmed, with steps 1–8 displayed in green and steps 9–16 in amber. If you’re using the sequencer to recall different presets, you can easily select the next preset using the Sequence Step switch. When pressed twice, however, the Sequence Step footswitch acts as a tap tempo button for the step sequencer and sets the tempo until the next step. The switchable glide function ensures a smooth transition from step to step.

Strymon Nightsky Connections
With stereo inputs and outputs, MIDI In/Out, an expression pedal socket and USB, the NightSky can be easily integrated into any setup.

Stereo connections, MIDI and USB

Whether in the studio or on stage, the Strymon NightSky is perfectly equipped for any musical environment. Thanks to its stereo inputs and outputs and line/instrument switch, the NightSky can handle a wide variety of set-ups in mono or stereo and a wide range of signal levels. Two 5-pin sockets for MIDI In and Out and a USB port are also available on the front panel for sending and receiving MIDI commands, allowing the NightSky to be integrated into any switching setup. Furthermore, the EXP socket can be used for real-time parameter control, preset selection or to recall up to 300 presets.
