The Antares Sybil Evo (License) is a De-Esser Plug-In which removes sibilants from vocal recordings with an adjustable compressor and filter frequency. It dampens particularly sharp and piercing “Sh”, “Ts”, and “Ch” sounds, often called sibilants. The rest of the signal remains untouched and the overall sound is more pleasant. Although this tool is very specific, the interface has a number of settings that can be made to attenuate only the desired frequencies. Nevertheless, it remains clear and easy to use, which makes it equally attractive for professionals and hobbyists in music production.
Transparent Processing
Especially important for a De-Esser like the Sybil Evo is not only that the disturbing sibilants can be eliminated, but also that other frequency ranges of the recording must not be touched. Here the Sybil Evo does all the work for precise filtering. If you still want to work with a slightly wider brush, you can use the controls to determine more precisely which frequency ranges need to be attenuated. Here you can determine the exact frequency to be filtered (High-Pass Frequency), the deviation range from this limit (Threshold), how strong the damping should be (Compression), and in which periods of time of the initial loudness (Attack) and the decay (Release) the filtering works. The result of this 5-controller filtering is displayed as a level diagram on the left. An interface can hardly be simpler, and yet you have full control.
