Software Boxed-Version

About Boxed Versions

Many music programs, DAWs and plug-ins are also available at MUSIC STORE as boxed versions. You receive a physical box containing a license code and a data carrier such as a USB stick, hard drive or DVD. This allows installation even on a computer or Mac without an Internet connection. Boxed editions are especially convenient for large sample libraries from Native Instruments, EastWest, Arturia or Spectrasonics, helping you avoid long download times.

Note that not every boxed version is fully offline-ready; some products require a short online activation. We recommend checking the manufacturer’s documentation or contacting our support team before purchase.

This category also includes iLok dongles – USB devices widely used in professional studios to authenticate software ownership. The dongle must be connected whenever the program runs and stores all license information for your purchased software titles.

FAQ – Boxed Versions

What is the difference between a boxed version and a download version?

A boxed version is supplied on a physical medium (DVD, USB stick, etc.), while a download version is delivered digitally via the Internet. Both offer the same functionality but differ in installation and delivery:

  • Boxed version: shipped by mail, includes media, manual, license code and sometimes a dongle – ideal if you have limited Internet access or prefer offline setup.
  • Download version: instantly available by e-mail after purchase, with no waiting time or physical storage.

Both contain the same features – the choice depends on your workflow and Internet speed.

What is included in a boxed version?

Contents vary depending on the manufacturer, but typically include:

  • Installation media: DVD, Blu-ray or USB stick with setup files and additional content or sample libraries.
  • License code / serial number: required to activate the software.
  • Manual or quick-start guide: printed installation instructions and product information.

For large DAWs or sound libraries, a boxed version makes installation much easier as all files are included on the medium.

Are there advantages when updating or transferring a license?

Usually no. Updates and license transfers are handled the same way via your manufacturer account or license manager, regardless of the version type.

Can I resell or transfer my boxed version?

Yes, provided the manufacturer’s license policy allows it. You must:

  • uninstall the software from your own system,
  • deactivate or transfer the license through the manufacturer,
  • and hand over the license code or dongle to the new user.

Some brands allow online license transfer, others require direct support contact. Note that EDU or special editions are usually non-transferable.

What are the differences between demo, EDU and full versions?
  • Full version: includes all functions without any limitations.
  • Demo version: time- or feature-limited, designed for testing before purchase.
  • EDU version: identical in features to the full version but offered at a reduced price for students, teachers and educational institutions (eligibility proof required).
