With the AstroLab 37, Arturia presents the compact 37-key version of the AstroLab performance synthesiser. Like the larger models, this synthesiser embodies the best of 25 years of innovation, development and passion. The AstroLab 37 combines Arturia’s innovative software instruments with hardware suitable for both studio and stage use. The hardware impresses first and foremost with its attractive design and a tidy control panel. The 37-key Slimkey keyboard is lightly weighted and offers a very comfortable playing experience; it also provides channel aftertouch. Thanks to its 48-voice polyphony, the synthesiser is guaranteed not to run out of steam, even when playing complex sounds with long decay times. On the 37-key model, a split point can be set up via the Analog Lab software. To the left of the porthole display – which, together with the encoder, forms the central control element – there are ten buttons for quick, direct access to sound categories and the four macro controls. Effects can be quickly adjusted using the four knobs and buttons to the right of the display. Features such as the flexible arpeggiator, a chord mode and the handy playlist function underline its claim to be a stand-alone instrument for live performances.
In terms of sound, the AstroLab 37 really makes the most of its ten sound engines. These include virtual analogue, samples, wavetable, FM, granular, physical modelling, vector synthesis, harmonic, phase distortion, Karplus-Strong and vocoder. Over 1,600 sounds are pre-installed as standard. If you connect the AstroLab 37 to a computer running Arturia’s Analog Lab Pro, you’ll have access to well over 10,000 sounds. In other words, with this synthesiser, you have direct access to all the plug-ins from the V Collection! For quick adjustments, you can use the four macro controls. With 17 insert effects, plus delay and reverb, you have everything you need at your fingertips to spice up your chosen sound. Naturally, you can also import your own sounds. The control interface is deliberately designed to make countless sounds from the outstanding engines available at the touch of a button. Anyone who still wants to tweak sounds can do so on a computer, which must be connected to the Astrolab.
The AstroLab 37’s futuristic exterior looks particularly sophisticated thanks to its modern white design, combined with the uncluttered surface and the attractive wooden side panels. All keys are backlit, which makes it easier to find your way around in low light. The circular OLED display with the encoder beneath it is particularly well-designed; a good compromise compared to the more expensive 61- and 88-key models.
The rear panel of the AstroLab 37 is delightfully versatile. In addition to the keyboard, there is a connection for a sustain pedal. This enhances the range of expression available on the keyboard. MIDI communication is handled via the dual In and Out sockets as well as USB. This is perfect for anyone wishing to use additional equipment, such as a rack expander, with the AstroLab 37. As a performance synthesiser, an audio input is, of course, a must! On the input side, the AstroLab 37 features a mono line input, which is a combined XLR socket and is also suitable for microphone signals; for signal output, there is a balanced stereo output pair with large jack sockets. The USB-C port is intended for data transfer with a computer. The USB-A port can be used to connect external storage (a USB stick) or an additional MIDI-USB controller.
