Getting Started with Metal Guitar

Electric Guitar

For metal, you need a guitar that delivers a powerful sound and supports fast, precise playing.

  • Humbucker pickups: They are essential for the thick, distorted tone that metal requires. At the same time, they help reduce unwanted noise.
  • Body shape: Popular models include the Superstrat (with a slim neck and often a Floyd Rose tremolo), Explorer, Flying V and modern single-cut guitars. Above all, pay attention to good neck playability.
  • Scale length and number of strings: Many metal guitarists prefer longer scale lengths, such as 25.5 inches or more, because they provide better stability in lower tunings. 7- or 8-string guitars are also widely used in modern metal.

Amp

For a metal sound, the amplifier is at least as important as the guitar itself.

  • High-gain amplifiers: Amps designed specifically for metal provide the gain and punch needed for this style. Brands such as Mesa/Boogie, Peavey (5150/6505), ENGL, Orange and Marshall (JCM800/900) are considered classics here.
  • Modern digital amps and modellers: If your budget is limited or you want maximum flexibility, systems such as the Kemper Profiler, Neural DSP Quad Cortex or Line 6 Helix are strong alternatives. They offer a wide range of sounds and are often well suited to quieter practice at home.
  • Speaker cabinet (cab): Make sure you choose a suitable cabinet and the right speakers. Celestion Vintage 30 speakers are among the most popular options for metal.

Effects

Some pedals and tools are part of the basic setup for many metal rigs.

  • Overdrive or booster: An overdrive pedal, such as an Ibanez Tube Screamer, can tighten the sound when placed before a distorted amp and help it cut through more effectively.
  • Noise gate: Especially with high-gain settings, a noise gate is important for controlling noise and unwanted feedback.
  • Tuner: A reliable tuner is essential, especially when using lower tunings and playing frequently.
  • Optional: Depending on the style, delay, reverb or a wah pedal can also be useful.
