The controller for DAWs, MIDI synths and modular systems

With the KeyStep mk2, Arturia introduces the second generation of its popular USB / MIDI / CV/Gate keyboard controller. At first glance, the KeyStep mk2 stands out with more controls, a colour OLED display and a new graphical layout above the playing keys. Still present are the highly playable 32-key Slimkey keyboard with velocity and aftertouch, the two ribbon controllers for pitch bend and modulation, and the transport buttons for the internal sequencer and the DAW.

The KeyStep mk2 is ideal for anyone looking for a compact USB keyboard for their DAW, needing a master keyboard with a comprehensive arpeggiator for their MIDI expander, and for anyone seeking a keyboard interface to bridge the gap between USB and MIDI to CV/Gate control voltages for their Eurorack modular system; or, indeed, all of the above.

Most of the new features in the second generation have been incorporated into the sequencer and the arpeggiator. The sequencer now stores an impressive 64 patterns, each of which can be up to 64 steps long. The sequencer is fundamentally polyphonic, though it also handles monophonic note sequences. In addition, rest, tie and legato can be programmed for each step. This adds a touch of 303 flair to the pattern, particularly with monophonic sequences. New to the KeyStep mk2 is the Mutate function, which allows a pattern to evolve or vary almost as if by magic. There is no Song Mode, but Pattern Chain is available instead; in other words, the ability to link different patterns. The fully editable arpeggiator now boasts 16 modes, half of which have been newly developed and offer a few surprises compared to the more familiar playback patterns. Chord Mode is as simple as it is ingenious to use: hold down the Chord button, press two or more notes, and you’re done. You can now play complex chord structures with just one finger!

The KeyStep mk2 comes with Ableton Live Lite and Analog Lab Intro, so you can get started straight away on your own computer without having to invest in initial studio equipment.

Digital and analogue interfaces in every direction

The connections have also been completely overhauled. Power supply and connection to the DAW are now handled uniformly via the USB-C port. MIDI In and Out are still provided via five-pin DIN sockets. The Sync In and Out ports can be used, for example, to synchronise analogue gear with a corresponding input. A footswitch can be connected to the sustain input for extended note control. There are now four analogue control voltage outputs: pitch, gate and two mod outputs are available. The latter can be assigned to various events such as velocity, aftertouch or the modulation wheel.
