Among solid-body electric guitars, there are two iconic basic shapes that also differ significantly in sound. On one hand, there is the Fender Stratocaster – usually with a body made of alder, ash, basswood, or poplar. The neck is bolted on and made as a one-piece maple neck entirely of maple or has a rosewood fingerboard. Typically, three single coils are used as pickups, giving the instrument a wiry, bell-like tone – the distinctive twang sound is typical for the Strat – it's the quintessential Fender sound.
In contrast, a Gibson Les Paul consists of mahogany with a arched maple top and has a glued-in mahogany neck. This choice of wood and construction method already provides a stable sound foundation, which the humbucker pickups used here give even more punch and power. The Gibson Les Paul feels most at home with a Marshall stack or a modern high-gain amp.
Additionally, the Fender Telecaster, designed by Leo Fender as the first electric guitar from the lap steel guitar, is still considered a classic. The now 70-year-old solid-body electric guitar is associated with the classic single-coil sound character and is also highly regarded in modern genres of rock and metal. Besides the famous Gibson Les Paul Standard, the Gibson SG is the most well-known model from the Nashville guitar maker. Often lovingly referred to as a rock plank, the guitar features two humbucker pickups in its basic configuration and has become immortal in the hands of Angus Young as the AC/DC guitar.
Over the decades, many different shapes and variations have developed between Fender and Gibson guitars, such as the elegant instruments by Paul Reed Smith, which combine the body shape of the Fender Stratocaster with the construction and pickup configuration of a Gibson Les Paul. This can be achieved more affordably, as shown by the instruments made in Europe by Fame, which offer this hybrid construction at budget-friendly prices. In addition to classic guitar shapes like the Stratocaster, Telecaster, or Les Paul, offered by Fender, Gibson, Epiphone, Squier, J & D, Ibanez, Yamaha, and Godin in countless variations and finishes, there are also many other beautiful shapes to discover: Fender Jazzmaster and Mustang, Gibson Flying V, Firebird and Explorer, the Yamaha Revstar models or the Danelectro Sitar-Guitar are just a few of the models ready to be played in various configurations.
An important question when choosing the right combination of electric guitar and amplifier is often the pickup. The most well-known designs are the single-coil for airy, clear sounds and the dual-coil humbucker known from the Les Paul electric guitar. The latter, played through an amplifier, provides a warmer and fatter sound and also effectively suppresses noise at higher gain settings. Exotic forms such as the mini-humbucker with a narrower magnetic field, P-90 single coils with extra-wide winding, and even humbuckers in single-coil format are abundantly represented in the Music Store online shop.
