Among solid-body electric guitars, there are two iconic basic shapes that also differ significantly in sound. On one hand, there is the Fender Stratocaster – usually with a body made of alder, ash, basswood, or poplar. The neck is bolted on and made as a one-piece maple neck entirely of maple or has a rosewood fingerboard. Typically, three single coils are used as pickups, giving the instrument a wiry, bell-like tone – the distinctive twang sound is typical for the Strat – it's the quintessential Fender sound.
In contrast, a Gibson Les Paul consists of mahogany with a arched maple top and has a glued-in mahogany neck. This choice of wood and construction method already provides a stable sound foundation, which the humbucker pickups used here give even more punch and power. The Gibson Les Paul feels most at home with a Marshall stack or a modern high-gain amp.
Additionally, the Fender Telecaster, designed by Leo Fender as the first electric guitar from the lap steel guitar, is still considered a classic. The now 70-year-old solid-body electric guitar is associated with the classic single-coil sound character and is also highly regarded in modern genres of rock and metal. Besides the famous Gibson Les Paul Standard, the Gibson SG is the most well-known model from the Nashville guitar maker.
