With the OP-XY, Teenage Engineering presents a perfectly crafted symbiosis of sequencer, synthesiser, sampler and performance instrument. The OP-XY impresses visually with its sleek, unified design, which stands out thanks to a distinctive greyscale gradient. Even the graphics on the high-resolution display are all rendered in greyscale. Details such as recording or parameter curves are shown in striking colours. Here, minimalism meets efficiency – and the device looks rather stylish too.
In terms of hardware, the OP-XY impresses with two fast Blackfin CPUs and top-class audio converters, which also have plenty of power to make their acoustic presence felt. As the casing is based on the OP-1 field, the OP-XY also features a built-in speaker and an integrated microphone. The pressure-sensitive pitch bend controller is located below the Plus and Shift buttons. The best reason to literally pick up the OP-XY more often is the 6-axis accelerometer, which can be assigned to various parameters and actions and triggers changes in the sound and/or pattern simply by moving the instrument. The built-in lithium-ion battery has a running time of up to 16 hours.
The fully digital sound generation is 24-voice multitimbral and features eight extremely versatile synthesiser engines, which are ideal not only for familiar sounds but also for truly outlandish ones. There are also three different samplers, specialising in drums, multisamples and synths. As the OP-XY can sample directly via the Audio In input and the built-in microphone, there’s hardly a place where you won’t be able to find new material to sample. :) Four filter types are available for further processing of the synth and sample engines. Thanks to the send effects – reverb, delay, chorus, distortion, lo-fi and phaser – the sounds can be spiced up in a variety of ways. At the Main Out, the first eight tracks have access to the mastering functions EQ, Saturator, Compressor and Limiter; skilful use of these components can significantly enhance the overall sound’s presence and punch.
At the heart of the OP-XY is its powerful sequencer, whose 16 tracks are divided into 8 tracks for internal sound generation, including samples, and a further 8 tracks for external instruments such as MIDI expanders. Nine patterns can be saved per track, each with a pattern length of up to 64 steps. A song mode is also integrated; songs can comprise up to 99 scenes; a total of 9 songs can be stored per project. The storage capacity is sufficient for over 10,000 project files, including version history, so there is plenty of space for new patterns over the coming years.
Programming or inputting rhythms and sequences is largely based on tried-and-tested standards such as TR-Grid or quantised real-time input. In addition, parameter locks can be set and there are two sequencable FX slots. Randomisers for various parameters, ten groove variants for swing, programmable polyrhythms, an intelligent transposition function called BRAIN, and a whopping 24 punch-in effects for quick and unique live variations – which have a long tradition at Teenage Engineering – round off the high-calibre performance capabilities. If that’s not enough, you can use the Accelerator sensor to shift pitches, rework grooves and, at the same time, adjust the effects settings, for example.
In terms of connectivity, the OP-XY is equipped with Bluetooth LE for bidirectional MIDI communication, as well as audio and MIDI via the USB-C port. MIDI is also accepted via the TRS input. A special feature worth mentioning here is the multi-out socket, which can be configured for CV, MIDI, audio or sync as required. Stereo inputs and outputs are provided as 3.5mm jack sockets.
