Modular software synth for in-depth sound design, modern productions and true sonic adventures

With u-he Zebra 3, one of the most exciting synth concepts of recent years enters the next phase. The software synth consistently builds on the distinctive Zebra concept and has been developed from the ground up. It combines analogue modelling with physical modelling and digital synthesis, without the instrument getting bogged down in technical theory. On the contrary: Zebra 3 is at once a powerful workhorse, a creative sound-building kit and a deep sound design instrument for anyone who likes to take their tinkering to the next level.

In-depth synthesis with no creative limits

It’s clear at first glance that Zebra 3 isn’t just another software synth. Its modular architecture allows for sounds ranging from silky pads to biting basses and complex, physics-inspired textures. This is precisely where its particular strength lies: the instrument remains musically accessible, whilst simultaneously opening doors to sonic worlds that go far beyond classic synth standards.

New architecture for modern sound design

Adaptive user interface with a focus on the patch

The Zebra 3 interface adapts dynamically to the sound design process. Modules only appear when they are added to the patch and can be organised via drag and drop. This keeps the workflow clear and, despite the instrument’s enormous depth, provides a surprisingly fresh and direct user experience.

Two oscillator engines for significantly greater sonic flexibility

A key highlight is the two oscillator engines. You can choose between wavetable and additive synthesis. The wavetable engine supports up to 16-part unison, whilst the additive engine operates with up to 1,024 partials and even allows for inharmonic structures. This makes Zebra 3 ideal for both classic synth sounds and exceptionally detailed, unusual soundscapes.

Spline Editor for Waveforms and MSEG Curves

The unified spline editor for oscillator waveforms and MSEG curves brings a particularly organic feel to sound design. Geometric morphing creates lively, dynamic curves that go far beyond rigid standard waveforms.

Greater depth through FM and physical modelling

FM oscillators with free routing

Zebra 3 offers FM oscillators with two operators plus an audio input as a third operator. This allows you to build significantly more complex FM structures without being constrained by a fixed scheme. Anyone who enjoys creating metallic, lively or highly dynamic sounds will find this an extremely versatile tool.

Modal Resonators, Comb Filters and Exciter

With modal resonators, comb filters, noise and exciter modules, Zebra 3 takes a noticeable step towards physical modelling. Bells, marimbas, plucked textures, resonant bodies and hybrid sound sources can be shaped in great depth. This is precisely what makes the synth particularly exciting for film, games, ambient and experimental electronic music.

A new world of modulation for complex movement

Pitch, Gate and Trigger as fully-fledged modulation sources

Zebra 3 treats pitch, gate and trigger signals as equivalent modulation sources. This opens up an almost modular-like freedom in routing and brings significantly more movement and vitality to the sound.

Mappers, Mod Math and MSEGs

With Mappers, Mod Math modules, MSEGs, ADSR envelopes and LFOs, Zebra 3 offers an extremely deep range of modulation options. Modulation signals can not only be generated, but also shaped, combined, transformed and organised rhythmically. This is a real asset, particularly for complex sequences, performance sounds and dynamic progressions.

Effects that don’t just embellish, but shape

Global FX Grid with authentic tonal character

The FX Grid is not merely an add-on, but a genuine part of the instrument. Chorus, flanger, phaser, delays, multitap delay, reverbs, compressor, EQ, filter, distortion, ring modulator and wavefolder are all on hand not just to enhance sounds, but to fundamentally shape them. What’s particularly exciting is that the send levels can be modulated per voice, creating depth and movement within the patch itself.

TextureVerb for shimmering spaces

A particular highlight is TextureVerb, which works with granular micro-fragments to create abstract, shimmering and modern spaces. This is a real source of inspiration, particularly for ambient, cinematic and futuristic soundscapes.

Over 1,200 presets and ready for any production

With over 1,200 factory presets, Zebra 3 comes with a massive sound library right out of the box. From cinematic scores and modern electronic music to 80s-inspired sounds, IDM, drum & bass and hybrid soundtracks, it quickly becomes clear that this synth is not only deep but also incredibly versatile.

Designed for modern setups

MPE, microtuning and MTS-ESP

Zebra 3 supports MPE, Microtuning and MTS-ESP in real time. This means the instrument is clearly geared towards modern performance and tuning workflows, appealing not only to traditional producers but also to experimental players and expressive controller setups.

For macOS, Windows and Linux

The synth is available for macOS, Windows and Linux and supports CLAP, VST3, AU and AAX. It is important to note that a DAW is required as host software. The Linux versions are still considered beta, but according to the manufacturer they are stable.

Who will find Zebra 3 particularly exciting

u-he Zebra 3 is ideal for producers, musicians and sound designers looking for an instrument that is both reliable for everyday use and deep enough to lose yourself in. Anyone working in modern electronic music, film scores, ambient, IDM, hybrid scoring, pop, techno or experimental sound design will find this a synth that works musically right from the start, whilst also offering an incredibly wide range of possibilities.
