With the 3rd Wave 8M, Groove Synthesis presents a synthesiser with hybrid sound architecture that impresses both visually and functionally. The main focus of the 3rd Wave 8M is on wavetable synthesis, which has been implemented comprehensively and convincingly in every respect. The three oscillators are also capable of reproducing classic analogue waveforms and the original 8-bit waveforms of the PPG Wave 2. A special feature is the WaveSurfer, which allows you to adjust the wave offset of all three oscillators simultaneously. It is just one of many details that show just how much passion has gone into this instrument. The even more compact 8M version has been further streamlined in terms of hardware, whilst the larger 7-inch display offers an even better overview. Most functions are just a button press away, allowing you to adjust all settings via the display or the function group controls. When it comes to synthesis features, however, no corners have been cut – the 8M is every bit as good as the larger keyboard version!
Each of the 3rd Wave Desktop’s 8 voices features three oscillators, offering a choice of 64 modern wavetables, 32 original 8-bit wavetables from the PPG 2 series, or seven high-resolution modelled analogue waveforms, including white and pink noise. If this impressive selection isn’t enough, you can create your own wavetables using the integrated WaveMaker tool. Has the overtone-rich drone sound from your modular system inspired you? Turn it into a wavetable! 32 memory slots are available for this purpose, and you can export and import wavetables to and from your computer at any time. Hardsync can be enabled between the sound generators, and the sound palette is further expanded by linear FM. The carefully constructed and (if desired) modulated sound spectrum feeds into two analogue filters connected in series. The first is a 24dB low-pass filter, based on a classic SSI 2140 circuit by Dave Rossum. The second is a state-variable filter, which comes remarkably close to the SEM filter in terms of both sound and, above all, functionality. The end of the signal path is marked by an equally analogue stereo VCA with panning capability. The sounds are given their final polish by two effects blocks, which generate various delays, phasers, chorus, distortion and reverb effects, amongst others, and can even be synchronised to the clock.
No fewer than four synchronisable LFOs, each with nine waveforms, four ADSR envelopes and three wave envelopes, give the sounds in the 3rd Wave 8M the necessary movement. Thanks to the comprehensive modulation matrix, which comprises 16 entries, 27 sources can be freely connected to 114 destinations. In this way, despite its fixed signal path, the 3rd Wave 8M achieves a level of modulation flexibility that one would otherwise only find in a modular system. Two ADSR envelopes are permanently assigned to the filters and the VCA, whilst two further ones are freely assignable. Specifically for modulating the wavetables, each oscillator has its own 12-step envelope, each comprising six time and level elements. The envelope times range from crisp and percussive to floating and ambient.
As the 3rd Wave 8M is capable of dual multitimbral play, you can play two sounds polyphonically on different MIDI channels simultaneously, depending on the available voices. There is a separate stereo output for each multipart. For combinations of two sounds, there are over 100 multi-programmes in addition to the 500 memory slots for single sounds. Each sound also features a programmable arpeggiator, a polyphonic step sequencer and Voice Mode, which allows you to choose between Poly, Mono, Legato, Unison and Chord.
