Sound Sculpture in Steel – Handpans & Steel Tongue Drums Overview

Structure and Sound Principle of a Modern Handpan

Handpans and steel tongue drums are melodic percussion instruments made of steel or stainless steel. A handpan consists of two metal shells (≈ 50–65 cm diameter) joined at the edge to form a resonating chamber. On top are precisely tuned tone fields; our bestseller Fame Handpan One D Minor (22″) features nine such notes. When struck with the fingers, the instrument produces a clear tone with a singing sustain. The technique is quick to learn – a light touch and quick hand release yield a clean attack.

Buying Handpans – Scales and Tunings

The central note (ding) defines the fundamental pitch and is surrounded by 8–9 tone fields (the “ring”). Popular scales include D Minor, C# Kurd, B Amara, D Kurd, C Major, G Major and D Major. Layouts are usually diatonic (5–7 notes, sometimes repeated), so nearly every combination sounds pleasant and in tune – ideal for beginners and creative playing.

432 Hz or 440 Hz – Which Frequency is Right?

440 Hz is the international standard. 432 Hz is often perceived as softer and more meditative. Both offer unique character – choose based on your ear and musical context (studio, yoga, sound therapy or stage).

Steel Tongue Drums – Durable Drums with a Warm Tone

Construction and Playing Technique

A steel tongue drum features cut-out tongues on its steel body, each tuned to a specific note and attached on one side to the resonator. It can be played with hands or padded mallets. With many sizes and note counts (also mini versions), MUSIC STORE offers a wide range. Because of their protective coatings, tongue drums are low-maintenance and robust, often less sensitive than handpans. Both share a warm, clear tone – ideal for meditative and ambient music.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Handpans & Steel Tongue Drums

What is a handpan?
A handpan is a melodic percussion instrument made of two steel half-shells with tuned tone fields on top and a resonance opening below. Played with the hands, it produces a gentle, harmonic sound.
What is a steel tongue drum?
A steel tongue drum is a tuned idiophone made of steel. Its cut tongues vibrate when struck to produce defined pitches. It can be played by hand or with soft mallets.
Are these instruments beginner-friendly?
Yes. Tongue drums are especially accessible due to their consonant tunings. Handpans require a bit of touch control, but offer rich, dynamic tones.
Hands or mallets – what’s better?
Handpans are typically played with hands and fingers for maximum expression. Tongue drums can be played with hands or soft mallets, depending on the desired attack and feel.
How many notes and which scale should I choose?
Typical layouts offer 8, 11 or 15 notes. The scale (pentatonic, minor, major) defines the mood; simple harmonic scales make it easy to sound musical right away.
What should I consider when buying?
Material and build quality, number of tone fields, scale/tuning, included accessories (bag, mallets), warranty and availability of re-tuning service.
How do I maintain and store a handpan?
Keep dry, avoid humidity, wash hands before playing, oil the surface periodically, and protect from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
Can handpans or tongue drums be re-tuned?
Yes. Many makers and specialist workshops offer re-tuning and repair services, especially for handpans.
What are they used for?
Meditation, yoga, sound journeys, studio work (ambient/new age), education, live performance, and relaxed home sessions.
Can I combine multiple instruments?
Absolutely: handpan + tongue drum with light percussion, loopers and effects (reverb/delay) to create immersive soundscapes.
