Gibson's Collector's Choice #37 is based on the 1959 Les Paul with the serial number 9-1953. Over the years and with changing owners, the strong character Burst got many nicknames, including "The Claw" for its unusually wide flame. Gibson's Custom Shop has once again spared no expense or effort in creating a small edition of the popular Collector's Choice series of electric guitar currently available to anonymous collectors under the name'Carmelita'.
The strong maple top of CC #37 Carmelita is the result of the Gibson Custom Shop's strictest wood selection. Only woods with as wide a flame as possible and the profile of the model are used. The two-piece ceiling is finally glued with original bone glue from the 1950s and double ground after curing. The so-called double carving process ensures seamless transitions and the traditional ceiling shaping of 1959.
The one-piece mahogany neck in 50s rounded profile has also been double-ground to make the neck and its course from the head plate to the body transition as smooth and'well-functioning' as possible. Of course the Carmelita Burst follows the classic design with long neck (Long Neck Tenon), which is glued under the neck pickup. Finally, the Gibson Custom Shop gives the one-piece rosewood fretboard the so-called rolled neck binding with rounded fretboard edges for smooth playability and a classic Paula feel.
In addition to the optical and haptic aspects, the distinctive sound of the 9-1953 was also precisely analyzed. The warm and powerful sound of the two PAFs with unusually hot windings and strong treble response was scrutinized in all positions and gain levels and accurately implemented with two Burst Bucker III humbuckers from the Gibson Custom Shop in neck and bridge position.
The historically accurate high output PAF replicas use unmatched coil windings in combination with Alnico II magnets to produce full and airy sounds and slightly increased trebles in the overdrive range. Both pickups are not waxed according to the original and have a 2-core fabric-covered vintage cable.
Even the hardware equipment of the Collector's Choice #37 remains true to the original and traces the origin of traditional plastic parts such as Potikappen and Pickguard right through to the exact composition of the materials. Accordingly, Gibson now offers original butyrate caps with a classic feel and aging behaviour. The pickguard is also made of the original multi-laminated plastics.
The Gibson ABR-1 Tune-o-Matic bridge in combination with a lightweight aluminium stopbar tailpiece was a revolutionary bridge and tailpiece, while solid Kluson tuners with historically correct single ring tulip grand pianos provide lasting tuning stability and a classic feeling.
Of course, the CC #37 Carmelita Burst from the Collector's Choice series will be delivered with case. The classic Lifton 535-style case now also undergoes an artificial aging process including naturally worn handles and tarnished buckle closures. A certificate of authenticity signed by Rick Gembar, President of the Gibson Custom Shop, including a registered serial number and the life story of the "Carmelita" is enclosed.
