The Arturia MicroFreak Vocoder Edition is a hybrid synthesiser featuring various oscillator models, a capacitive touch keyboard controller and a vocoder function. This compact instrument is the result of a collaboration between Arturia and Mutable Instruments and features eleven different digital synthesis models, such as Karplus Strong , Wavetable , FM, Waveshaper , Grain or Chords. These models are unmistakably the work of Mutable Instruments. The Plaits oscillator from the Eurorack served as the inspiration. The tone generator is followed by an analogue 12dB multimode filter, which corresponds to the Oberheim SEM VCF.
The ‘Vocoder Edition’ moniker says it all: a 16-band vocoder, complete with a gooseneck microphone, now features on the MicroFreak Vocoder Edition. The sound generation has been expanded specifically for the vocoder to include sawtooth, square and noise waveforms, in order to reproduce classic vocoder sounds as faithfully as possible. The behaviour of the 16 frequency bands is adjusted using the Timbre and Shape controls. The possibilities go far beyond the typical robotic speech. 16 new presets offer a glimpse of what the MFVE is capable of. A three-part chord or a string sound, particularly when combined with the arpeggiator, opens up an unexpected range of sounds. The socket at the base of the gooseneck microphone is intended for headphones. The headphone socket on the unit is a TRRS socket, of the type also used on mobile phones and their headsets; this is where the microphone plugs in, and an optionally available adapter can also be connected to make the audio input accessible. Plug in a drum machine here, and the synthesised drums from *Members of Mayday – Sonic Empire* will find their way into your own music.
In addition to the BPM-synchronisable LFO, two envelopes provide variation in the sound; one follows a classic ADS structure, whilst the other functions either as an A/D envelope, can be looped, or operates in the style of a slope generator. The range of movement options is rounded off by a modulation matrix that visually displays sources and destinations. Performance aids include an arpeggiator, the sequencer and the extravagant capacitive touch keyboard with 25 keys, which also outputs CV, Gate and Pressure via separate sockets.

In a crowded market with plenty of duplication and similar products the Microfreak is a genuine breath of fresh air. Completely unusual architecture, amazing results, very accessible (and my kids love it too). Blows my.mind every time I switch it on.
The most outstanding feature is the magnificence of his voice. It provides an unlimited range of sound. Also very easy to use. It takes good design engineering to design such a small device so efficiently in terms of ease of use. I predict that it will be a synthesiser that is sought in the future and that has left its mark on its period and future periods.
