Software Boxed-Version

Everything you need to know about Boxed Versions

At Music Store Professional, many programmes, DAWs and plug-ins are also available as boxed editions, delivered directly across the UK. These physical packages include a licence code together with a USB stick, hard drive or DVD, allowing you to install the software even on a computer or Mac without an internet connection. For large data sets – such as sample libraries by Native Instruments, EastWest, Arturia or Spectrasonics – a boxed version is often the best choice to avoid lengthy downloads.

Please note that not every boxed version operates entirely offline. Some products still require a brief internet connection for activation. It’s worth checking with the manufacturer in advance or contacting our UK support team if you need clarification.

In this section you’ll also find iLok dongles, widely used in professional studios across the UK. These USB devices act as secure proof of ownership for your software licences. The dongle must be inserted whenever the programme is launched and stores all activated licences from multiple developers.

FAQ – Boxed Versions

What’s the difference between a Boxed Version and a Download Version?

A Boxed Version is supplied on a physical medium such as a DVD or USB stick, while a Download Version is provided digitally via the internet. Both usually include the same features and functionality but differ in delivery and installation:

  • Boxed Version: Delivered by post within the UK, typically including installation media, printed guide, licence code and sometimes a dongle. Ideal if you prefer physical media or have limited broadband speed.
  • Download Version: Provided instantly by e-mail, saving shipping time and physical storage space.

Both editions are identical in content. Your choice depends on personal preference, workflow, and the speed or reliability of your internet connection.

What’s included in a Boxed Version package?

The contents vary depending on the manufacturer or product but usually include:

  • Installation media: DVD, Blu-ray disc or USB stick containing the installer and any additional content or sample libraries.
  • Serial number/licence key: required for activation.
  • User manual or quick-start guide: printed instructions with essential information for setup and use.

For larger DAWs, sample libraries or sound collections, boxed editions can simplify installation by providing all necessary files locally, without lengthy downloads.

Are there any advantages for updates or licence transfers?

Generally, there’s no difference. Updates and licence transfers are managed through your manufacturer account or licence manager, regardless of whether it’s a boxed or download edition.

Can I resell or transfer a Boxed Version to another user in the UK?

In most cases, yes – provided the licence terms of the manufacturer allow it. Ensure that you:

  • Uninstall the software from your computer,
  • Deactivate or transfer any activated licence within your manufacturer account,
  • and provide the new user with the licence key and, if required, the dongle.

Some manufacturers support online licence transfers, while others require direct support contact. Please note that EDU or promotional licences are often non-transferable.

Do Demo, EDU and Full Versions differ in functionality?
  • Full Version: complete feature set without limitations.
  • Demo Version: time-limited or function-restricted; ideal for evaluation before purchase.
  • EDU Version: identical to the full version but available at a discounted rate for students, teachers, or educational institutions within the UK. Proof of eligibility is required.
