Studio Electronics Tonestar 8106 Black Edition is an ARP 2600 inspired synth voice for the Eurorack. It is a limited edition of the Studio Electronics Tonestar 8106, which is an ARP 2600 inspired synth voice for the Eurorack. The 32 HP wide module has a VCO, a noise output (white noise) with attenuator, a voltage controlled 6dB/Oct high pass filter, an LFO with triangle and square wave outputs, an AR/ADSR envelope generator and a VCA with feedback control. A total of 27 parameters can be set using the rotary control. Six switches and 21 sockets, including for example 1 V/O, make Tonestar 8106 an adaptable synth voice in the modular system. The VCO of the Tonestar 8106 from Studio Electronics is largely similar to the Oscillation, Boomstar and Omega modules. Tonestars Oscillator is a combination of Arp, Oberheim and Moog circuits and has very good tracking over a long range. In order to maintain this demanding level, certain components are selected by hand. The Sustain control of the Tonestar 8106 replicates the behavior of the Tonestar 2600 and Odyssey: after the initial decay, the envelope sinks very slowly and adds an extra portion of texture to the sound. From a technical point of view, this is a mistake, but it has musically interesting effects and is desirable. Both modulation depth and rate of the LFO can be controlled via a control voltage. The same applies to the ADSR amount, which can be manipulated by MIDI Dynamics, MIDI Volume or even an LFO. According to the motto of Greg St. Regis, everything must be patchable with everything, so that technically incorrect patchings (for example pulse wave out to ADSR out) often produce unexpectedly exciting and pleasing effects.
