With the Walrus Audio Melee, the Oklahoma-based company has launched the ultimate effects pedal for shoegaze and post-rock applications. As a "wall or noise" generator, the Melee combines an extremely juicy distortion and a characterful reverb with three distinct algorithms. As the central control element, the joystick allows free adjustment of the reverb mix and distortion gain, so that countless sound textures can be called up in conjunction with the switch for the internal sequence of the effects. While three-stage tone and decay switches determine the sound character of the pedal and the decay time of the reverb tail, the sustain footswitch allows the reverb to be extended indefinitely. Another practical detail is the Walrus Audio Melee's flexible bypass footswitch, which not only switches the pedal on and off permanently, but can also be used as a momentary switch to set short sound highlights.
