A 3/4 classical guitar is a larger version of a children's and youth guitar, specifically designed for players who have outgrown a 1/2 classical guitar but are (still) not tall enough for a full-size 4/4 guitar. This guitar size is primarily intended for children between 8 and 12 years old (depending on their height and hand span) and serves as an ideal transition instrument that facilitates child-friendly learning.
While the standard scale length (the vibrating string length) of a full-size 4/4 guitar is about 650 mm, a 3/4 model typically ranges between 580 and 610 mm. The shorter scale length makes it easier to press the strings with less effort, while the slimmer guitar neck provides a comfortable grip. The narrower body is proportionally adjusted to the total length (approx. 920 to 960 mm) and scale length, and the body depth is also reduced compared to a full-size guitar. These features improve accessibility and handling for younger guitarists.
Parents and teachers should ensure they select the right guitar size for the child. A guitar that is too large or too small can hinder the development of proper playing techniques and, due to poor ergonomics, may even cause physical discomfort.
