Guitar Strings at MUSIC STORE

Guitar strings are among the most important elements shaping tone and playability. A fresh set can instantly revitalise any instrument, which is why replacing strings regularly is always worthwhile. Below, you’ll find the key differences between string types, materials, and gauges to help you choose the perfect set from the MUSIC STORE online range.

Nickel, Steel, Nylon – the right string type for every guitar

It’s essential to select the right strings for your guitar. Although different types may look similar, their construction and material bring clear differences in tone and feel.

Acoustic Guitar Strings

Acoustic strings use a metal core for a bright, resonant sound. The alloy defines the character: 80/20 Bronze (80% copper, 20% zinc) delivers clarity, while Phosphor Bronze creates a warmer, deeper tone. Most sets include four wound strings (E to G) with plain B and high E.

Electric Guitar Strings

Electric strings are thinner than acoustic ones and typically made of steel wire coated with nickel. This gives them flexibility and smooth playability, making bends and expressive techniques easier. A wide variety of gauges and sets are available to match different styles, tunings, and scale lengths.

Classical Guitar Strings

Nylon strings differ completely from acoustic or electric sets, as they have no metal core. Traditionally made from gut, today they are produced from synthetic nylon, creating a warm, mellow tone. Bass strings are wound with materials such as silver-plated copper, while treble strings remain plain. With their softer tension, nylon strings are excellent for fingerstyle playing and are especially beginner-friendly.

Finding the right gauge

Gauges are often described as Light, Medium, or Heavy, but the exact diameter in inches provides more precision. A set marked .011 - .052 means the high E is 0.011” (approx. 0.27 mm) and the low E is 0.052” (approx. 1.32 mm). Each player eventually develops a preference based on feel and style.

  • Scale length – longer scale increases tension
  • Tuning – higher pitch increases tension
  • Gauge – heavier strings increase tension

Lighter gauges are ideal for expressive bends and solos, while heavier strings deliver tighter low-end response, perfect for lower tunings and heavy styles.

Coated Strings

Brands like Elixir, D'Addario, and Ernie Ball produce coated strings with a thin protective layer. This barrier prevents corrosion, prolongs lifespan, and reduces dirt build-up in the windings. The coating is so fine that it does not affect vibration or tone, making coated strings a reliable choice for players seeking long-lasting performance.
