Great and well constructed pedal. Obviously, this is digital and critical consumers might object to the precise digital nature of the sounds or might compare this unfavorably to their analog originals. But that’s not the point here: the Terraform has loads of creative sounds that tickle your imagination. Several great tremolo options, the chorus and flanger stand out for me, plus the great dynamic filter. I didn’t quite connect to the vibe and phase sounds but they sure are above average. So much better then my previous and rather ghastly Mooer multieffect…
Bought the Terraform to replace my standalone modulation effects and thus save some space on my pedalboard, while at the same time adding some effects that I did not possess. I was hesitant to buy a multi-effect, because my pedalboard consists of high quality "boutique" effects and I was doubtful whether I could maintain, more or less, the same sound quality. Tried the Boss MD200 first, which sounded exactly like I feared: digital and artificial. Did not try the Strymon, since it looked too complicated for me. The Terraform was a great surprise: all effects are of good to terrific quality. Let me run through the effects clockwise:
> Auto-wah. I’m not much of a wah man, but I think, in general, that auto-wahs cannot really replace a conventional wah. I tried to get a cocked wah sound of it à la Money for Nothing, but I have not been able to reproduce that sound. In general, the auto-wah sounds good enough to my ears, but I will probably not use it much. 7/10.
> Envelope filter. More or less the same thing. Sounds fine, but not really my kind of effect. 7.5/10.
> Flanger. Great effect. “Barracuda” sound was easy to get, as was “A Forest”. 8.5/10.
> Phaser. Another great one. I use this for a number of Pink Floyd songs and I can nail the tones (not the playing…). The Terraform replaces my Mojo Hand Nebula IV phaser and it does so without difficulty. 8.5/10.
> Uni-Vibe. Perfect for those Hendrix and Gilmour tones. Super happy with it. 9.5/10.
> Rotary. Same as Uni-Vibe. Great for Pink Floyd and Beatles; also play some Yes stuff with it. 9.5/10.
> Auto-Swell. Works well, but I prefer to use my volume pedal. 7/10.
> Tremolo. Excellent trem, very versatile. Easy to dial in the “Bang bang” sound. It’s not quite as organic as my Mr. Black Deluxe Plus (my all-time fav trem), but still very good. 9/10.
> Harmonic Tremolo. Have to confess that I was not familiar with the concept of a “harmonic tremolo”, but it is a very nice effect; sort of a cross between a trem and a Uni-Vibe. Like it! 9/10.
> Chorus and Dimension Chorus. Both are stand-out effects; absolutely gorgeous. From Rush to ‘80’s rock, everything is there; lush, deep and, if you want, gurgling warbles as well. They replace my Black Country Custom Spiral Array chorus, which already was very good; the Terraform is even better. 10/10.
Other plusses to consider:
- Like the fact that it has 8 presets.
- It can be run in stereo; currently, I run 1 channel into a Fishman Loudbox, thus enabling the Terraform to be used also in combination with my acoustic guitars. Very nice addition.
- Sturdy built quality – although standalone effects are probably more resistant to live abuse.
- Really compact enclosure; I was actually surprised at how small it is.
The only complaint I have its that you cannot switch between presets with your foot; the tiny button requires hand operation. But I can understand that this would have increased the size of the pedal.
All in all, I have been able to let 3 boutique pedals go (phaser, trem & chorus), and I don’t feel I have compromised in terms of sound quality. And I now have access to a vast number of additional excellent modulations. Buy it; you won’t regret it.
