In the production of every single Vic Firth product, be it drumsticks, mallets or brushes, the employees in the production facility in Newport, Maine, place special emphasis on the specific selection of the material used. For the production of drumsticks, Vic Firth primarily uses American hickory from the southern states of the USA, which accounts for 85% of the total production volume. Maple, imported from Canada, accounts for 15% of the production. Vic Firth first dries the raw material for drumsticks in special drying rooms for a fortnight until the desired processing quality is achieved. The remaining moisture content (between ten and sixteen percent) guarantees that the wood will not warp after being manipulated into a drumstick. During the further production steps, from sanding to the desired size of square to round wood using stone moulds to finishing the sticks (applying the surface varnish) and the final printing and packaging, the wood repeatedly undergoes strict quality controls. In this way, Vic Firth guarantees constant and uniform weighting, pitch and wood colour within a pair.
