Calibration algorithms developed jointly with Fraunhofer IIS.
For stereo setups with KH 80 DSP and all analog (non-DSP-based) Neumann monitors in conjunction with the KH 750 DSP subwoofer
Individually calibrated measurement microphone
Room-adaptive target curve
Phase and amplitude optimization for analog Neumann monitors
For Mac and PC
Hardware requirements
1 pair of KH DSP speakers or 1 KH 750 DSP subwoofer in combination with a pair of analogue (non-DSP based) KH speakers
Computer (Windows 10 64 Bit and macOS 10.13, 10.14 or 10.15)
Audio interface with balanced analog input with 48V phantom power and 2 balanced respectively analog outputs, digital AES/EBU or S/PDIF output (KH 750 DSP only)
Neumann's Automatic Monitor Alignment is a dedicated application for KH 80 DSP stereo sets with or without the KH 750 DSP subwoofer respectively two non-DSP-based monitors of the KH-Line, which are driven by the analogue outputs of the KH 750 DSP. The KH 750 DSP subwoofer can also be used to automatically adjust analog KH Series studio monitors.
The great advantage over previous calibration solutions lies in the new calibration algorithms, which were developed together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) specifically for Neumann studio monitors. Neither a plug-in nor a special audio driver is required: The alignment data is stored and processed in the DSP monitors. This optimizes not only the amplitude frequency response, but also Phase.
Due to the independence from computers after the successful calibrate, such a system is not only interesting for professional sound studios but also for demanding hifi enthusiasts. In terms of price, it is also extremely interesting compared to other monitoring and hi-fi systems of this quality level.
The following speakers and subwoofers are network-compatible and can be controlled directly by the software:
KH 80 DSP
KH 750 DSP
The following speakers are not networkable and must be connected through a networkable subwoofer to be included in the system setup:
KH 120 A
KH 120 D
KH 310 A
KH 310 D
KH 420/KH 420 + DIM 1
Digital is the best way to go here
For correct operation of the MA-1, in addition to a DSP-based Neumann subwoofer or loudspeaker pair for each DSP device, a LAN cable for control, possibly 2XLR cables for connecting the loudspeakers and a network switch and another LAN cable for the computer are required. The MA-1 measurement microphone is operated at the microphone input with 48V phantom power of an audio interface. If the system is to be powered via the digital input of the subwoofer/speaker, a digital audio output is also required on the interface.
All in all, there are several possibilities forthe connection from the interface to the box(es):
AES/EBU: The digital output in XLR format requires a line with 110Ohm impedance, but the unbalanced AES3 input with BNC socket at the box requires a signal with 75Ohm source impedance. Strictly speaking, an impedance converter must be connected in between.* This method achieves the best results. Experience has shown, however, that an adapter from XLR to BNC is sufficient.
S/PDIF: The specifications of the S/PDIF standard are included in the AES3 standard. So an S/PDIF output can be connected to the BNC input with a simple plug-in adapter or adapter cable and will be recognized by the DSP without any problems.
Analog: It is of course equally possible to drive the DSP via the analog XLR input and at the same time benefit from the advantages of speaker correction with the MA-1. In this case, however, you have to accept an additional conversion step (analog input to DSP).
Detailed documentation and the required, free Neumann Automatic Monitor Alignment software are available in the Neumann download area.
Please be sure to switch off Direct Monitoring on the interface during the calibration process; otherwise you risk damage to your loudspeakers due to a feedback loop! To do this, turn the source selector from Input to DAW, if necessary.
This task can also be performed by a suitable resistor network (T-element).
