Very flexible unit with 16 ports which are automatically recognized whether it is an in going or outgoing port : no trouble with installation, and in addition you get a USB3-3 Hub; handy if you also use midi equipment on USB. I am really pleased with it
"I was there, Gandalf! 3000 years ago, when installing a midi interface was a tough adventure!"
It was 15 years ago since I bought a new midi interface. It used to be rather tricky to install back then. Now it's just SUPER EASY. Just connect it, and my computer and my DAW immediately recognized the interface. Ready to use in seconds!
My midisport rack mounted interface died. There are not so many 8x8 interfaces around these days. I opted for the ESI because of USB 3 support. Apple announced lack of compatibility on my prior interface. So this one should be future proof, and it has got rack ears included in the box!
I use it for some old synths in the studio like: Roland XP, SH201, JP8000, Yamaha TX81Z and a Alesis D4.
Next to these I got multiple options on the front for extra midi out's or in's.
The control is perfect in my DAW, I write the midid and the gears play's it by this midi interface.
USB hub usefull for an I-lock and a link.
Lights on the front indicates the status.
only minus: the 19" rack ears are glued to the ESI, that's a little minus because you have to choose which one you want in the front and can't turn it back without damaging the glued parts.
First I had the ESI on top of my rack but the glued parts slide a bit down, so I ve put another 19" piece under it to support this.
Nice piece in my studio, very essential , don't like the glued ears and the color -)
